Stopping Money Being Paid Into Account

Hi,

Is it possible to put a block on external money being paid into a bank account? Long story short someone has been having their benefits paid into one of my bank accounts for the past few months (long story, don't ask) and after recent developments I want that to stop. The person hasn't had the money moved to another account despite being told to so I want to just wash my hands of the situation and block the money being paid in at my end. Is this something that can be done while still allowing withdrawls from the account? I intend to phone the bank tomorrow but just wondered if anyone knew the answer?

Thanks.

As soon as you tell the bank your account is being used by a third party expect it to be closed. You have breached the terms and conditions. This may make it harder for you to open another account at any bank as you may be suspected of commiting or allowing fraud to be committed. You need to get this person to stop using your account or close it and open another one- proceed with caution, you are skating on thin ice.

Pretty sure this is not possible.

Why not ring the person/company paying the money in and tell them.

Ultimate option. Close account open a new one. Given that its a payment being made into the closed acc, it should be bounced back.

    Any example from real T&C?

I would open the second account first, then close the old one.

Why don't you suggest that the offer of using your account has expired and any future payments into your account will be considered a gift.

No I haven't. I checked with the bank before allowing it in the first place. Plenty of couples have money paid into each others accounts with no problem. The DWP website even has a section referencing it:

Benefit or pension payments can be paid into someone else’s account (third party) if the terms and conditions of the account allow this. The account holder should be someone the person trusts, usually a relative or close friend.

Really don't need the hassle of being accused of keeping the money from her, which is exactly what she would do. Just want to be rid of it altogether.

Closing the account is looking like the best option from the replies so far. It's not a big deal really, it's not my main account or anything and was only really used to put money by if I was saving for anything. Would just have been better not to have the hassle of closing and opening accounts if I could have avoided it.

When the payment are paid in does it show the National Insurance number?

Write to them and them you want to stop the payments being made into your account.

Whether they will action the request that is another question.

Barely a hassle to open a new account, and to close an old one. You could have done it in the time it took you to post about it here.

It's easy to say that but getting a new account set up, debit card and PIN issued and having it added to my existing internet banking isn't exactly going to be an instantaneous process. It's more of a hassle than simply being able to put a block on the old account like I was hoping to do.

Make sure you have a full record (statements) of the old account before you close it, just in case anything comes back onto you later e.g. how much was paid in, whether anything was paid out and when.

You might also want a traceable record of notifying the person whose money it is (the benefit person), that you will be closing the account and that they will have to make alternative arrangements to obtain their benefit payments. Write (not email or txt) to them, and send the letter to them with free proof of posting from a post office.

Give them a month to make alternative arrangements, to appear reasonable.
