toilet duck limescale remover worked for us, it came off in big lumps, as its a viscous gel it sits on the limescale and disolves it rather than running off

i would be very wary about buying concentrated hydrochloric acid off ebay, I use it at work and you need a fume cupboard to dilute it due to the fumes it gives off and it is nasty stuff. please wear proper eye protection and gloves.

How do you get a 'dry bowl'? (i.e. stop the bowl from re-filling after a flush)?

I've got a toilet brush. Pump it in-and-out of the bowl and that forces the water out. What little was left, I soaked-up with a tea towel.

Update: the coke did "bog-all"! Will go to hardware shop today and try Spirit of Salts. It sounds cheaper than Harpic products; but I can always go there is S of S doesn't work.

Do you apply it to an empty bowl? The limescale is about 1/4" thick and is right up to normal water level.

You could probably carefully scrape a lot of that off before applying a limescale remover.

I would second the advice to be very careful about using the strong cleaning products - get as much air flow as possible through the room, and wear protective gloves & protect your eyes.

Also, make sure you don't mix cleaners based on hydrochloric acid with bleach - you risk generating chlorine gas and you really don't want to do that.

Blimey HOW RELEVANT was that post? Just poured a load of bleach in, just to tidy-up that and the bath, wash bowl etc!

Have stepped back from nuclear, to go with Harpic limescale remover. (Actually, I'm going to check the contents against Tesco's own, who have 2 for £1.50!)

    Will post results tomorrow.

    Thanks again, tyllwyd!

Scrape with what? I have had a dink or two, with nothing budging, but would be worried about cracking the pan? It really is solid.

Well all I can say is that I tried bleach, hydrochloric acid and other toilet cleaners and none cleared the thick limescale although they did make it white rather than brown. Sprit of salts left overnight cleaned it right off and a day later you could eat your lunch off it.....should you be inclined.

    Thanks, spannerzone.

Chipped off all the limescale right down to the u-bend today. Didn't smell nice!

I've poured in a whole bottle of limescale cleaner, more out of hope than expectation though. Will leave overnight, but firmly expect I'll be off to the hardware shop tomorrow for some SOS!

With any kind of implement that is A - stiff, and B - isn't stronger than the material of the bowl. Wood. Plastic. etc.

Scrape along the surface, not down onto it.

I've not been well, and not kept up with the limescale problem as well as I shoukd. Bought 2 bottles of Mr T limescale remover and the limescale has nearly all gone after 2 applications
