You are quite entitled to reject the boots.

And the retailer is entitled to refuse.

    I agree.

The Sale of Goods Act states that goods must be of satisfactory quality. It goes on to give examples of this which include "appearance and finish" and "freedom from minor defects".

You are quite entitled to reject the boots. Contact the retailer and state that as the boots are not of satisfactory quality as defined by the Sale of Goods act, for the reasons given above, you are rejecting the goods for a full refund, as per your statutory rights.

You may want to offer them the opportunity to supply an alternative pair of boots, as an alternative to the refund, or you may just want to buy elsewhere.

thankyou for that, I'll quote it in my covering letter. My son is totally happy for a replacement, let's hope I don't have to fight too much!

Please provide something from the SoGA to back up that claim.

I've already quoted the bits about "appearance and finish" and "freedom from minor defects", both of which give the OP justification to reject the goods.

That's irrelevant to their statutory rights.

I could be buying a table to chop up and use for firewood; I'd still have the right to reject it if it arrived cosmetically damaged.
    True.
But that would be rather petty and stupid.
just because you have a "right" does not mean you have to blindly exercise it.

I think TR is just trying to illustrate a principle. I don't think he really intends to buy a table for firewood.
You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'

Only if they can prove op damaged the goods or the fault was not inherent. Which they haven't yet done.

Reject them for a refund op, as is your right. Or ask for a replacement, although the way they've responded I certainly wouldn't want to be a customer of theirs any longer.

The defect doesn't look minor enough for them to consider the rejection unreasonable and as pointed out, DSRs are irrelevant.
