Hello i'm looking into calling the USA from my mobile phone here in the UK. I am on the Pay As you go tarrif with Orange. I did a spot of research on the Orange website and it says this will cost 20p per minute, can that really be right, thats cheap!

This is the link that I found the info on, I hope the link works for you.

http://www.orange.co.uk/cgi-bin/international/country.pl?navSel=2&zone=nam&sp=payg%3Apayg&tariff=pgt&country=241

I was just looking on the BT website and they charge a whopping 10p for every 6 seconds to the USA from a public payphone.

So can anyone confirm that this orange deal is correct, or you may even know a cheaper option. Keep in mine that I am only on PAYG and don't pay any monthly charges with Orange what so ever.

I got rid of my landline due to the increasing charge of the line rental with BT. I only use a mobile now.

I could get access to a landline but it would not be in my own home or not the right time for me to make the call.

fair enough but if you could use someone's landline you could set up an account with 1899, in fact you can use 1899 and 18866 from a mobile, have you checked them?

You need to dial a number before the USA number and it depends on how much Orange will charge you for that part of the call, have a look here.

If a friend would allow you to register their landline number and only you used the pre-fix of 1899, you would get the bill for those calls.

You could try using predial's orange access number to call the states:
    0797 682 7878
    http://www.pre-dial.com/

Only worth using if you're on the "talk and save" or "choose your own off peak" plans

Thanks for all the advice guys, although it is a little confusing to me.

Just one question that I have is if I call USA from my orange phone (PAYG) do I just dial the number straight eg. 1-222 333 3434 & that will work at 20p a min when it connects. Someone before spoke about callling some sort of access number first and then call the USA number. Is there any surcharges for being connected to abroad ?

I see there will be a connections charge with orange for dialing the country code. Anyone know how much this is with orange ?

20p/min to the USA is ok, but it may well be cheaper to use a cheap calls provider instead. I've got a PAYG on 02 and have been using DialAbroad (https://www.dialabroad.co.uk/mobile) for a while now. Calls to the USA at 1p/min plus a 10p connection charge plus the cost of calling an 0207 number. On 02 PAYG my off-peak calls to 0207 were 2p/min so my total call cost was 3p/min plus the connection charge. Pretty good from a mobile...

    Hope that helps.

    Car.
