    I agree. Box valance in a neutral colour (ie some shade of beige) or similar would look best. I am only 24 and wouldn't consider them old fashioned; I suppose frilly or pastel coloured might look a bit prissy though. We have a very expensive divan bed but the pattern on the base is still naff!

    If I had a cheap or ugly divan base then I would definitely put on a valance (and have in the past). Have to agree that the box valances do look neater too.

    The valance has to match the sheet though, otherwise it looks just as messy and uncoordinated (the whole point being it's used to hide a base that is unattractive or mismatched).

    My current bed has very nice fabric on the divan base & drawers, so it's no longer an issue for me.
    A waist is a terrible thing to mind.
