Schedules are there for a reason. If all airlines regularly held back departures then the whole system would collapse. Small airports might be able to get away with it a little but there's no chance of it happening at LHR.
Just for the record -
1. I never asked them to wait for me and I certainly didn't expect it! When the stewardess said that's what wouId happen, I thought to myself "Yeah, right!".
2. It is standard practice for that particular incoming NYC flight apparently. They hold the outgoing flights until it arrives. I expect there is a cut-off point at which they decide they can wait no longer.
3. It was a flight from Iceland to Glasgow - I very much doubt there are ever "hundreds" on them!
4. I already said it would never happen at LHR - no need to repeat me.
