Hi Ive just had a nursery report for my 3 year old and they note he uses both hands and has not favoured any hand in particlular ( he writes/scribbles:p with both hands, but can only operate scissors with his left hand? should i be worried ? he can put his shoes on by his self and count to 10 should i be worried , My older son just favoured his right hand round about that age we are a family of right handers, does this mean my son will be abixtrous

why should you be worried ???

a lot of pre school children use both hands for a while before beginning to favour one over the other

or like you say he may continue to use both equally well for different tasks :)

As soon as DS could hold a rattle we knew he was going to be left handed.

Ambidextrous, I think it is called.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

I work in a reception class (4 to 5 year olds) and we get lots of kids that use both hands. It is not a problem. Most will have decided that one hand is easier by 5 but it they can use both then great for them.
If he can use scissors he will be ahead many in his class.
If I could give a child any skill to have before starting school it would be to be able to dress themselves. much more useful than being able to write.;)

My son is like that. He's 8 now and writes mainly with his right hand as most other people do, but he can use both hands equally well. He can use left or right handed scissors.

I used to be fascinated when he was colouring in, as he'd colour the left side of the page with his left hand, then move the crayon to his right hand to do the right side of the page!

Just let your child get on with it, and let them settle on what they feel most comfortable with.
Here I go again on my own....

My son was like this, and I was told not to be concerned, while he was in reception he broke his right arm which forced him to use his left. By then he could write equally well with both hands, so towards the end of reception his teacher encouraged us to help him "choose" as he happily used either, and we did admittedly encourage him to use his right, which he has happily done since.
Our other son has been left handed since rattle time, never tried his right.

I wouldn't bother yet, he's got a good couple of years before he should choose.

I am mostly right-handed but I throw with my left hand and kick with my left foot ... so far as I know it's never given me a problem. Seems [STRIKE]alleft[/STRIKE] alright to me and I'm past my half century ;). I've occasionally wondered if I should really be left handed and draconian teachers and dinner ladies of my infancy maybe insisted I did things the "right" way, but I cannot remember either way.

Yes you should be worried sick. Being left handed has been understood as a sign of evil posession for centuries. The latin for left handedness isn't SINISTER DEXTER for nothing! :p :rotfl:

I'm right handed and Mrs MATH is left handed. She had her left hand tied behind her back in writing classes:eek: I hope we've left those days behind us.

Two of the MATHLETTS are right handed and the youngest now aged 7 uses his left to write and pick up objects and his right to use scissors, eat and punch:rolleyes: Although he uses his left hand I'm sure he is not possessed (although he can get very noughty if he looses at football)LOL

Enjoy your son being an individual - bog standard is boring!
