Air problems in my "new" Parkray COnsort 88 1986

So have installed the parkray, and got her hooked up to the central heating and water, yesterday. However, no matter what I do, I can't effectively control the rate of combustion with either the thermostat or the top dampener.

The thermostat automatically sets to closed once a certain temperature has been reached - and the dampener only has two settings - open, which makes it roar, or closed, which makes it roar a little less, a bit like my stove with the air wheel fully up.

I've tried burning housecoal, pet coke and now am trying a phurnacite brand, cozyflame - and seem to be getting best results in terms of heat output with this last one.

However, it still looks as though it's burning away fairly fast, with the flames flickering crazily.

Is there anything anyone knows of for this make and model that I could have overlooked to stop or reduce the air intake? I spoke to someone in b and q today who said there should be rope sealant for the door - then another two people in the trade who said there is no sealant, except little bits of cardboard like material around the glass.
