Yes, it's really rude. I wouldn't do it to my best friend, and wouldn't expect them to do it to me either!

Thanks for the help, yes the doorbell can be heard.

Ok so I'll try buying net curtains that are twice the width like Ulfar suggests - thanks. I didn't really like the look of net curtains on this house but it looks like I have no choice.

I'd like to know where the law stands though in the UK because it seems odd if it's perfectly legal for people to intrude on privacy on your property like that.

There is no space to put a flower border without moving the path as goes right alongside the house. You can't really see through the windows as its so bright outside, so I wasn't expecting privacy to be an issue when I bought it, but some people seem to actually cup their hands around their eyes and lean up against the windows and look through. It's quite surprising as where I come from in the countryside, people aren't this rude.

This house is on the outskirts of London, but it's fairly secluded in a sense as it has a private garden surrounding it, and can't be seen from the street.

I do wonder where it stands legally though, as it's quite intrusive

Does the path go right up to the windows, or is there space to put a flower border / bushes in front of the window?

Couriers will be on a tight schedule, so will want to quickly find out if you are in or not. Combine that with the number of people who can't hear the door or have a broken doorbell, and I'm not surprised they look through windows.

Can your doorbell easily be heard by the person ringing it?

My door bell can but its amazing how may delivery drivers don't ring it. It used to really wind me up.

I know have a little sign saying please ring doorbell for attention and I have put black and yellow hazard tape around it.
  • id just get a red lamp and sit in the window with a mankini on:D

I think it is Very rude, one of the people I used to work for had a neighbour who would call and never ring the bell, she just peered in the living room window and tapped on the glass. Why? I think it is very weird behaviour.

I posted it on the law forum to find out of it is truly illegal like the other post says - http://www.thelawforum.co.uk/just-bought-new-house-now-people-looking-through-my-windows
  • i don't think its illegal to look, i wouldnt personally do it, my main concern would be if people are looking in now, when you are there.

What would happen if undesirables are looking in and see you are out. I would get blinds.

IKEA do a roller blind in white gauze (called ENJE) which lets light in, but obscures enough for privacy, comes in various widths from 600mm up to about 1400mm, and is a fairly easy job to cut down to fit. Our kids hate people peering in so fitted them all round. (Not to be confused with their cheapest ISDANS ones which are too transparent).

Altho I like the mannequin /knife/ ketchup solution, above- maybe you could do a Norman Bates dead granny in rocking chair version for Hitchcock aficionados?

the lounge is already dark enough though without reducing the light even more during the day. I guess with such rude ppl around this area we have no choice.
