It's not people I personally know, it's mainly couriers delivering parcels or tradesmen we found online or in the paper. For example gardeners, plumbers, electricians etc. Sometimes they turn up 4 hours early without letting us know so we aren't expecting them, and ring the door bell but then look through the windows.

Net curtains don't seem to work when they press their faces up against the window. I've looked into having the path moved so it doesn't go alongside the house, but it will cost a lot :/

Prickly plants under the windows. If there's no room for a proper bed, even berberis or pyracantha in a narrow pot might deter (you can train these flat against the wall but people still won't want to lean against it).

If you can get to the window quick enough, I'd wait for them to peer in and jump up yelling RAAAARRRRRRR or something to scare the life out of them, maybe with a scary mask on (left by the front door for such occasions :D).

So I take it from the responses I'm not unusual in that I think it's rude?

Yes it's rude. I would challenge someone I'd seen looking through my window then ringing the doorbell.

Get some curtains, there's no other option apart from putting up with it.

Net curtains will work you just have to make sure you buy a curtain width that is twice the window width, this allows you to have folds all the way along the curtain.

I have the same setup as you have and I can't see through my nets when stood at the front door.

Does the path go right up to the windows, or is there space to put a flower border / bushes in front of the window?

Couriers will be on a tight schedule, so will want to quickly find out if you are in or not. Combine that with the number of people who can't hear the door or have a broken doorbell, and I'm not surprised they look through windows.

Can your doorbell easily be heard by the person ringing it?

You want one way privacy window film. Looks like a mirror on the outside but you can still see out from inside. Google it, and there are reviews on Amazon which are generally okay, seems worth a try as it doesn't cost much.
