All of which is totally irrelevant

Perhaps. But THIS is totally relevant ...

The money in question hadn't even been allocated for household bills - it was allocated to purchase a washing machine, hence her purchasing it in the first place. So i'm afraid to say if you haven't paid your bills on time then it's not their fault

The obvious answer is that they had to buy a different washing machine with the knowledge that they would be refunded within 30 days as the law requires. I wouldn't expect them to go a month without one.

    But still irrelevant.
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.

Or perhaps not only did they have to fork out for a washing machine using other funds, but as the original purchase was a mistake, it's possible OP's wife bought a machine much more expensive than she had intended to.
The fact remains that it's not exactly any of our business what the circumstances around the OP's problems paying the bills are, the fact still remains that the company have money that isn't legally theirs, and OP is out of pocket to the tune of £700 as a result of this company's illegal actions.

I expected to receive a refund within 30 days. It is now 46 days.

To join the lets be critical brigade if money was so tight it seems foolhardy to spend £700 on a washing machine. You can get decent washing machines for £300 :)

I would also suggest purchasing a second machine before receiving the refund seems equally reckless!

Still I hope everything works out well for you!

While I agree it is often a sensitive subject etc.....due to the OP saying the below, it reads more along the lines of consequential loss. And if that is the case, then while its still no business of ours it certainly is relevant.

On the flip side, if paid by credit card or if people did have excess money they wouldnt need until 2 weeks or more after the refund was due to be processed......I'd say reordering is a reasonable action. But then I'm usually cautious that way.

What action can I take now? We have also incurred further costs because without access to our money we have not been able to pay all bills on time now.

While I appreciate the interest in my thread, I am only concerned with getting back my the money I am owed via the refund.

As halibut2209 correctly stated, the rest is irrelevant.

I recently had a bad experience with Ultimate Appliances. Bought an appliance using my debit card that they failed to deliver on 2 separate occasions. I was then told by them that that particular model had been discontinued by manufacturer & to select an alternative model from their website.

As they stocked nothing else similar to what I wanted I requested a refund & was told it would be made within 30 days. It didn't happen & further requests were ignored, so I started a charge-back via my bank.

Bank told me they treat this kind of thing as fraud. Anyway, good news for me, as I finally received my refund 2 weeks ago,- Ultimate Appliances had held onto my money for over 3 months in total.

I Would never ever use them or any other such internet electrical company again. I ordered from John Lewis in the end, but was lucky that I had the money to do so, & not dependent on having my money actually refunded before I could shop elsewhere as OP & many others have to do.

OP, do you have an email stating that the refund will be issued within 30 days from Ultimate Appliances? I had one & this was accepted by my bank as evidence of a refund being due & I also had an email from them stating that they could not supply the original appliance as ordered. I also provided copies of emails I'd sent with the continued requests for my money to be refunded. The bank could see from my bank statements that I'd paid Ultimate Appliances £x amount of pounds back in December.

I can only hope & pray that you do get your money back & soon.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

I think you need to try the disputes department again at your bank.

Say you're looking to raise a chargeback because you ordered goods and services but they were not delivered. You have also cancelled the order.

A chargeback is not a consumer right, but in the circumstances it would be correct of the bank to try a chargeback. Not sure why they're fobbing you off.

Ultimately, you paid for a washing machine. You don't have a washing machine and no washing machine was delivered. Therefore, you should have your money back.

Many thanks for your reply. I have written close to 30 messages to Ultimate Appliances now and received no response (they also ignored correspondence from my solicitor). Phone calls have been ignored or kept on hold for almost an hour.

After a lengthy discussion at my local bank I presented them with copies of all the correspondence I have sent and they have agreed it is fraud and will be looking to do a charge back.

I intend to provide a report to the Police concerning this matter as well.
