solicitor wants certified ID with strict conditions...

Hello,
I have had an offer accepted and I am currently going ahead with the mortgage application and supplying information to my solicitor.
The solicitor needs certified ID, I understand why this is, but I believe this should be able to be done by a teacher, accountant, bank official etc. or even at the post office.
On the solicitor's form it says the conditions are strict and it MUST be done by either:
a) A solicitor who is on the Solicitors Roll.
b) A Licensed Conveyancer who is on the CLC Register.
c) A Chartered Legal Executive.
d) Any Bank or Building Society Official usng their official identity certification stamp ONLY IF the copy document is also certified by a mortgage broker or IFA who is FSA registered.
Doesn't this seem a bit excessive? It's a pretty big inconvenience for me since I'm going to end up phoning around some Solicitors so I can fulfill this request by my..............Solicitor.
If they insist on this condition how much do you think a local solicitor will charge for this service?

Sounds like they are not local. Hence the request.0 -
I'm going through conveyancing at the moment and had the same issue.
I ended up sending my solicitor a copy of my photocard driving licence and paid them £4.00 for them to do some checks on the electronic databases to confirm this was me. Saved me having to go to a solicitors office to have a check done in person.
Might be worth checking with your conveyancers to see if they offer the same service.House Buying Tracker:

:rotfl:yeah sure. Joe bloggs the teacher...
sorry -no disrespect to teachers but it's not like it's easy to check if joe is actually a teacher.....

well a few phone calls is not really 'a pretty big inconvenience' is it now....? If you'd used a local solicitor, this problem would not have arisen.

To be fair you're right, it's not much in the grand scheme of buying a house so I will just get on with it. But, it makes a slight mockery of the online conveyancers sales pitch which I would imagine goes something like:
"Why appoint a local solicitor who you might need to phone or visit in person, instead appoint an online conveyancer with which you can communicate to through email and check your case progress online. How convenient! By the way, the first thing we'll need you to do is pop down to your local solicitor to certify your ID. Thank you."
Anyway, like I say, I'll just get on with it and phone around tomorrow.0 -
Far more convienient to sit down with your conveyancer and talk through everything face to face. Deal with issues that arise, hand documents in, sign documents etc.
Even better if the vendors solicitors are local as well. As often solicitors have a mail system between each other.0 -
Ah! So you chose an online conveyancing outfit?
30 admin cleks doing the work with a single licenced conveyancer 'overseeing'.
Wait till you get the bill! That nice competitive quote you were tempted by? Did you check what it includes? (more to the point what it excludes!)
There'll be an extra or two...0 -

Well this to me just shows that online was chosen as possibly cheaper, but just going form the Id request I can't see this purchase going smoothly or quickly!
I chose local, not the cheapest but I can email and get a response back same day and take all documents in personally to avoid delays!
Are you sure you wish to proceed with the online conveyancer? Did you get local prices?0
