set up was basic. connect ethernet cable to the correct slot on the router and to the modem. turn the modem on and waited a minute or 2. turned the router on and pressed the wifi button so that it was on. after selecting wireless on the home cinema it searched for a network and as the instructions say i selected the netgears network name aka the ssid. i then put the network key password in and everything was going ok at that point. it told me on screen that it worked fine and briefly described what we can do online with the system. the problem came when trying to actually do any of these things online. for example when i pressed the internet button i got a message saying cannot connect. Please describe exactly how you set up the router, what cables got where etc.
Did you check that you could connect to the internet from the computer (either wirelessly or via ethernet), before trying to set up the home cinema?
it did connect to the net ok on the computer. although the netgear genie software said there was a firmware update available and the update failed.0 -

out of the 3 homeplugs i linked to in post 1 and post 10 which is the best to go for?For cable router, you are far better off getting a homeplug than going wireless. Tad late now maybe. Plus you can buy additional homeplugs to extend the network, and some of the homeplugs are also wifi enabled (so can create hotspots around a home, where previously dead areas may have been)
As for available ports on modem router, a port switch would have solved that issue.
as far as available ports go we arent that bothered if i can connect 1 home plug to the modem and another to the tv and have it work like that then that is what we may end up doing. do we really have to connect them to the router also? i have connected a games console directly to the modem in the past and it worked ok.0 -
i looked into it and you have to upgrade your package to get it for free.Moneyineptitude wrote: »I agree. I also don't know why the Op spent £60 on a router when Virgin would have provided a new wireless "Superhub" if he'd simply complained that the very old one he posted a photograph of wasn't operating correctly.0 -
Thinking about it, having Virgon cable broadband, yet having Sky TV, does not seem very cost effective. ?That gum you like is coming back in style.0

we got a deal. plus i dont fancy the hassle of trying to change provider. i have noticed sky deals are made out to be great but in the small print it says you add a line rental on top of the supposed good deal. we also only have cable connected to the house.Thinking about it, having Virgon cable broadband, yet having Sky TV, does not seem very cost effective. ?0 -

In your setup, the default gateway will be the IP address of the router. This is normally 192.168.0.1, or 192.168.1.1.
A DNS server is required to translate between domain names and IP addresses. You should use the same IP address as the default gateway (above).
What diagnostic facilities are on the home cinema box? Does it allow you to ping an external IP address or domain? If so try and ping https://www.google.com. If you get no response, then something isn't set up right.0 -
the router does not have an ip address. it just has a wifi network name(ssid) and a network key(password). if it has an ip address then whatever it connects to must detect that automatically. there is nothing in the instructions about an ip address. when the home cinema searched for a network it found the ssid.In your setup, the default gateway will be the IP address of the router. the SSID is just the name of your wireless network. Believe me, the router does have an IP address.
Are there any advanced network settings available on the home cinema box?0 -
So why not Virgin TV, and you could get all the catch up services you want without the need for a separate internet connection to the box.Shirley if as suggested a couple of times you asked, VM would send you a new modem/router.donnajunkie wrote: »we got a deal. plus i dont fancy the hassle of trying to change provider. i have noticed sky deals are made out to be great but in the small print it says you add a line rental on top of the supposed good deal. we also only have cable connected to the house. That gum you like is coming back in style.0
