Just back from Jordan: If you want an Arabic experience without the hassle( like Marrakesh), then would thoroughly recommend. Petra well worth seeing, but for me the roman remains in Jerash were easily the highlight. Downtown Amman not expensive, and Easyjet(fairly sure) fly there.

If you didnt get hassle in Jordan then I expect you took vaseline and loved every minute of the shafting you will have received.

Not quite long haul - But the Emirates is kinda wow.

A truly eloquent addition to this discussion. You obviously have more experience of being shafted than me, and therefore I must assume that the genuine welcomes and fair prices I experienced were but mere figments of my imagination.

Don't be put off by NYC with some shopping around and planning it may be achievable.

    What is your budget?

I would def not go long haul for 5/6 days. How about Italy? Plenty to see there.

    I would, without a moment's hesitation.
But then I like travelling and planes and hanging around airports.
I'm quite happy chilling out on a long haul with a good book, some banging choons on the i-whatever and a trolley dolley serving me up free drink whenever I want it.
For the OP I'd recommend SE Asia. More bang for your buck.

I love travelling too and I have an odd fascination with airports - but only when I'm alone. I certainly wouldn't want to do it with kids in tow.

Flying east on long haul and recovering from the journey is fairly quick. In the other direction not so quick.
We flew back from Bangkok on day time flights via Muscat last Thursday. My body clock still hasn't sorted itself out, hence the time of this posting.

Try America but cheaper. Washington DC is great too. All depends on if you miss the cherry blossom with your dates.

5/6 long haul is worth it depending on how long the long haul is. For instance most of the USA and Canada, totally worth it, OZ or New Zealand then no.

    You could try India.

Great idea. It doesn't take long to scoot round India and see all the sights!
