Cheapest long haul break with wow factor

The kids and I have been through a rough year and I plan to save up and take them somewhere special this time next year.

I really wanted to take them to New York but the cost is just scary, both flights and accommodation.

So, I will have about 5-6 days with them at the start of April '14 and want to go somewhere (not beach) longhaul which has the wow factor but doesn't cost the earth.

I know I won't get this for peanuts but just wondered what the best price destinations are?

Thanks.

My thoughts, I have no idea on costs as the schedule isn't out yet for most airlines. It may be a bit far but what about Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia?

What about a taster safari in Africa?

Anywhere longhaul is going to be expensive at the moment due to taxes and fuel.

If you want somewhere with a non-European feel how about Istanbul? Not technically long haul but still quite an adventure and fairly cheap.

Just going to say exactly the same thing when I read this post.

Doshwaster + 1. Stay in the old town called Sultanahmet. Easy to get around by cheap tram and ferry.

Here's a decent inexpensive B&B with awesome view from the roof-top breakfast terrace...

For less than a week, a long-haul flight is not worth it: you would spend so much time getting there and then sleeping off the journey that you would miss out on the holiday.

It would help if you said something about the ages and interests of your children. In any case, I think that both Egypt and Morocco rank well above New York in the 'wow' factor stakes.

too short time for long haul holiday IMO . Ages would help . Turkeys a good shout though. Somewhere special in mid april . Does it need heat as there are always good memorys anywhere so long as its special . (euro-disney) Budapest is good and interesting and rome too. Im going to Aintree Grand National this mid april(less than 5 miles away) and i bet half of europe would like to be there. New York is my favorite place and 6 days there will be great

Agree Morocco, maybe Marrakesh? Interesting old town, lots to see and do, and not far from the Atlas Mountains if you want some adventurous outdoors - can do trekking and/or 4x4 adventures, potentially you could take a day or two out into the Sahara dessert too.

Would depend on ages/interests of your kids though - but March/April has good all inclusive prices, and the place has the wow factor, and no where near a beach!

    What is your budget?

What are the ages and interests of your children?

Why must it be long haul?

Marrakesh is a great destination, but it ain't for everybody.
Some of the 'in your face' stuff [which is difficult to avoid] can be a bit unsavoury!

Just back from Jordan: If you want an Arabic experience without the hassle( like Marrakesh), then would thoroughly recommend. Petra well worth seeing, but for me the roman remains in Jerash were easily the highlight. Downtown Amman not expensive, and Easyjet(fairly sure) fly there.
