If you want advice on a career in librarianship I hope you've checked the CILIP website.

Ultimately you will need a Masters. At the moment you could get a job as a library assistant but you wouldn't progress further than that. I'm afraid it isn't possible to climb the ladder without a postgrad qualification. There are hordes of fully qualified librarians out there and you have to compete with them! The good news is that you can study for the MA part time, lots of people do that and if you're really lucky your employer will sponsor you.

Oh Filigree, you'll get him started on the 'masters conversation' now. There have already been numerous threads on that one! :wall:

I have looked at their site. I agree that the bad news is that I might need a Masters, which is not something I really want to do because of cost and studying has not been fun at UG level.

There are certain jobs in a big library at management that you can get without a Masters so there could be a chance in those areas. But really a library job of any sort would do for now.

Maybe I could go into Book shops or archives where a Masters would not be needed.

But I mean at the moment a masters just sounds like hell to me.

There must be a career out there that does not need a masters and that is fairly decent. There must be something.

    No, there aren't.

I have no degree or masters and have no career as a result.

Of course there are, you muppet.

I rest my case (see no 123).

SP, what was I telling you the other day about my friend who earns circa £200k? He has neither a masters nor a PhD. In fact, I'm not even sure he has a UG degree.

Lol, I know that, but Library work is clearly not one of them.

I know you said that. I guess I just pick bad sectors to work in where degrees seem right important.

As to why you can not pick library work up on the job I don't know. I did it before with only 1/2 days worth of training and I picked it up fine.
