Of course, it may be that none of us can really say what the correct pressures should be as the OP hasn't told us what engine his car has, and it's quite common for pressures to be different for diesel and petrol models.

    Petrol 1.6, sxi estate.

Wrong again - according to several tyre websites 205/55 is the correct size for the 16 inch rim on an Astra estate.

http://www.puretyre.co.uk/vauxhall-tyre-pressures/ gives the range of tyre pressures.

And this shows why more basic maintenance should be in the driving test. Your MPG has dropped as a higher pressure tyre has lower rolling resistance - one of the many tricks car manufacturers use is to run very high pressures during their testing to determine MPG for their new cars, hence the rather ridiculous figures they get.

According to the OP/User, these tyres were never used on that model of car, because of it being that model. They might have been an option, but unlikely, as those rims don't fit that wheelsize. Can you provide proof? Evidence?

Where does the OP state that?

205 55 16 is a standard Vauxhall size. Used on the Zafira too.

Rather than just spouting rubbish I checked, spent a bit of time looking around on the net. Go check for yourself.

Lots of Astras come with 205/55/R16 fitted excluding SRI and VXR trim.

Question relating to tyre pressure as I think I am missing something doing something wrong.

Car is Astra Estate 2007, was in for a service recently and when collecting it they said I had too much air in the tyres. I said I didn't think that could be the case as I checked it previous week, garage told me it should only be 35 psi. IU didn't question this as I thought I must have made a mistake and assumed they would know better than me. The tyres are 205-55 16's and clearly says on the front two Max 44 psi and on the rear it is 51 psi (different brands, in that front two are the same and rear two are the same).

Surely 35 psi is under inflated? or is the max not the recommended psi? I'm confused as I don't understand where they get the 35 psi from.

As stated by the doubters, two different tyre brands fitted, that the people attack me state. I don't recall a time when Vauxhall fitted mis-matched tyres to their cars. That have different pressures in them, from the ones stated by the manufacturer, as they were clearly not OE fitment.

Quote all you like from the owner's manual, but this is clearly NOT what they was asking.

Did the OP state which version of the car they were using? NO. It says a Vaxhall Estate. Not a higher performance of the vehicle.

So methinks that some people need to learn how to read clearly, and understand what they are commenting on before they actually post, and abuse me. The posted evidence is useless, as it's from the user manual; and the wheels/tyres are obviously retrofit. Lern to raed.

The manufacturer's recommended pressures will be the same whatever tyre is fitted, provided the tyre conforms to the size, load and speed rating of the original. Different brands on the two axles don't make any difference, as long as they are not radial/cross-ply mixed as per the usual rule.

The car is 7 years old, so I don't think we can draw any conclusions from the fact that different brands of tyre have been fitted. The car could easily have had 3-4 new sets since it rolled off the forecourt.
