The very real point of the OP is that Tesco has grabbed a large share of consumers who think that Tesco will be the cheapest or as cheap as the nearest competitors. Tesco has now silently dropped their policy to match petrol prices, they have also been a major factor in the closure of independent stations so for many the only station for a couple of miles is a Tesco.

The point of the OP is that Tesco is no longer reliable to be the cheapest (not that it ever really was - but they had/have that image) The point of the OP is to bring this to the attention of a lot of people. The point of the OP is not to deny Tesco's right in a free market to price the petrol what ever they want to. It's the image that Tesco has built up over the years that now is fast becoming a false image, people need to realise that.

Surely that's good marketing though. Tesco has created this brand image of low petrol prices, despite it not being necessary true. Therefore, for the common man, people will go to them solely based on that brand image.

    Great marketing I say!!!

Tesco Express Horsham now 95.9p/litre for Diesel and Unleaded!!!
    What a load of hike!
I thought they were supposed to be competitive, perhaps they are trying to take advantage of the good people in Horsham as so many petrol stations in the area are now closed (only 3 left now). They know most good peeps have to go there to fill up.
P.S. Correct me if i'm wrong but is there not usually a slight difference in price between Diesel and Unleaded? I've never seen them advertised at the same price before?
Also, whilst i'm having my rant. I've noticed their pricing on 'selected' items in their main store at Broadbridge Heath are creeping up in small doses... Maybe i'm paranoid but I can now do the same shop in Sainsburys for less. This has never been the case in the past!
Anyway, perhaps thats why their shares are beginning to turn downhill slightly... The monopoly is causing too much greed and people are going elsewhere. I thought they had 'GREAT VALUE for customers' down to a T.
    SHAME ON YOU MR TESCO!!!

Some excellent points made here by people. Fudge I do see what your saying, but non of us are really bothered about looking at it from their point of view, they make billions - there is simply no need to make their petrol prices higher than they should be, they are actually using their monopoly (isn't this illegal?), along with their "cheap" image and power to rip the average person off. As people have said Shell seem to be the ones that are setting the fairest price now, good for them I say and I'm sure more business will come their way if they continue to do this.

Races I can't believe how much some of the items are now in Tesco it disgusts me! Asda or Sains cheaper on so many items...as long as people choose to shop elsewhere and not purely at Tescos then hopefully they will not acheive their ultimate goal of dominating every retail market in the UK. Yes I go there sometimes but not just there, tbh the quality of some of their products leaves a lot to be desired too!

Erm, considering it's a free market, why does a supermarket have to have the cheapest petrol? There's no real point to your topic I'm afraid.

Undercutting the competition until they are forced out of business, thereby narrowing the market and creating less choice for the consumer, and then cynically hiking up prices once you've done that - I wouldn't have thought that's many people's idea of a free market!

I suspect the reason behind the recent price rise at Tesco forecourts is to recover the money they recently had to fork out to motorists affected by the contaminated fuel fiasco in February.

I don't exactly see how I was wrong. From what I can see, the whole point of this topic is that people seem to think that Tesco should have the lowest (or most competitive) petrol prices in an area based solely on the notion that they USED to have this. However, they no longer have this and therefore some people feel that Tesco are unfair in not doing this.

From what this seems, It's once again an example of the frequent tesco bashing on this forum that is often prevelant despite being a successful business.

JPS - Why does it matter that Tesco make billions? They don't have a monopoly - in my region, there's not a single Tesco petrol station and only one supermarket petrol station that I can think of. I'm sure it's the same in many other regions, not so much that there's no Tesco petrol stations but that there's a lot of competition. not "being bothered to see it from their point of view" is a very ignorant viewpoint. Why should it be ignored that they have a very sucessful business model yet people seem hellbent on disputing Tesco's position.

Jamborino - Undercutting is perfectly legal in a market. Have you heard of the term 'cash cow' whereby companies sell products for below their market value in order to get people 'in the door'. Fortunately this is not a communist country and therefore people have a choice in where to shop. If people feel that they don't wish to shop at Tesco they are well entitled to feel that way and shop elsewhere. However, Tesco do not own a monopoly and never have, and due to the monopolies commision I don't think they ever will

You were wrong because you said "there is no real point..." .......There is a point as I have explained in great detail to you. In case you need it in simplistic terms.......... The point of this thread is a warning that Tesco is no longer to be relied upon to be the cheapest.
