At Tesco Petrol was more than Diesel it hasnt been that way for years, diesel was always cheaper
Got to be honest, since i bought a diesel car abour 7 years ago, I have NEVER seen any petrol station anywhere that sells diesel fuel for a cheaper rate than petrol. I remember making the comment to my co-workers that yes its more expensive to buy, but as the cars use less it ends up being a cheaper option to use. (Didn't help that i was doing 75 miles a day at the time! And I wonder how many people still queue at Tesco to fill up thinking it will be cheaper than elsewhere?
It's not country-wide unfortunatly.
Around the local area the prices go along the lines of:

Gosh, I remember the widespread disgust when one of Ken Clarke's budgets pushed it through the 50p a litre barrier - and that was only 12 years ago. And now it's almost doubled. Peoples' wages certainly haven't doubled in that same period.0 -
Tescos in Askham Bar York is still 93.90

I'm afraid there is a hell of a lot of point to the OP, it's a shame you can't see it. But I will try to enlighten you.
OP,
You have brought up an important topic, and these are my thoughts on it.
Tesco many many years ago (15 years or more) were amongst the cheapest and they had a spokesman on the TV news saying words to this effect.....
"We will always be cheaper than the oil companies, we will always find that little bit extra to beat them"
Then Tesco had a Petrol price match policy - double the difference refund. The trouble was Tesco later had no intention on always being the cheapest, it was frequently the case that Tesco was the first in the local area to increase the prices, and when challenged under their policy they did not always lower their prices straight away, they would use weasel excuses about that they would not reduce the price until the next time they did a "survey" which they claimed to do on Mondays and Thursdays, then they claimed haing done the survey they had to wait for the data to be sent to HQ and to wait for the OK to be given from HQ for the prices to be put down. So they would continue to have higher prices for a week or more. More than enough time to encourage their competitors to increase prices.
In reality Tesco Petrol HQ was a subscriber to the catalyst petrol price database which gave them near realtime updates of the prices of their competitors. So their claim to be "always match the cheapest" just didn't hold true when it was them who increased prices first.
Many people like me threatened them with trading stds for their claims on petrol prices, many people like me kept on their backs to force them to lower their prices. Until recently when they decided to drop their petrol pricematch policy (quietly). They obviously have decided that they have enough market share and have influenced the closure of many competitor stations, that they now have no need to be the cheapest, and they will happily continue to be the first in areas to raise the price - only now they have no policy to contradict.
All we can hope for is for Stelios to give us Easyfuel.0 -
Well thanks for that insight. I wasn't aware that Tesco did have a fuel price match. However, as you have noted, they no longer have this. Therefore, there's no reason to belittle Tesco for not having the cheapest petrol based solely that years ago they did have.0

The very real point of the OP is that Tesco has grabbed a large share of consumers who think that Tesco will be the cheapest or as cheap as the nearest competitors. Tesco has now silently dropped their policy to match petrol prices, they have also been a major factor in the closure of independent stations so for many the only station for a couple of miles is a Tesco.
The point of the OP is that Tesco is no longer reliable to be the cheapest (not that it ever really was - but they had/have that image) The point of the OP is to bring this to the attention of a lot of people. The point of the OP is not to deny Tesco's right in a free market to price the petrol what ever they want to. It's the image that Tesco has built up over the years that now is fast becoming a false image, people need to realise that.0
