Tesco Petrol stations...not so cheap anymore??

Options
Just been to Tescos in Seacroft, Leeds and was shocked to see they are selling unleaded at 94.9p litre. Now I know petrol prices are on the up recently, but there is a Shell just 2 mins down the road from me that is selling petrol at 93.9p, and various other petrol stations (I think Sainsburys at White Rose) is still selling at 92.9p.

A few years ago, you could always put your money on the supermarket petrol stations offering the cheapest petrol. This is simply not the case with Tesco any more. They are now deciding to raise their prices at the pumps before everyone else does. I know they say we always keep our prices competitive with other local stations, but they just don't seem to be the lowest price any more.

It's just like their supermarkets really....some of the prices in Tesco are ridiculous compared to Asda, and they know they can get away with it because most people don't care about paying a few pence more, but it all adds up and makes them huge profits. It now seems they are doing this at their petrol stations too, so a word of warning; check your local petrol stations before filling up at Tescos - there is a good chance it won't be the cheapest anymore.

In nearly every town in Britain you see derelict petrol stations which were put out of business by supermarkets muscling in on the petrol industry, often selling at cost or slightly below cost with the sole intention of permanently wiping out these smaller independent garages.

The result is that, amazingly, we now have the lowest number of petrol stations in the UK since 1912.

In 1974 there were 74,000 and now there are less than 10,000. It's staggering really.

And now the supermarkets are well on their way to establishing a stranglehold on the market, with any competition being weak. This means they can now hike their prices. Suddenly the supermarkets are no longer the consumer champions and their real motives become clear.

Tesco are applying the same formula to loads of market sectors: wipe out the competition by undercutting them on price in the short term, then once a stranglehold has been established, whack up the prices and watch the £s roll in.

Erm, considering it's a free market, why does a supermarket have to have the cheapest petrol? There's no real point to your topic I'm afraid.

Because they were the cheapest for years and years, and most still are bar Tescos. Tescos are now using the reputation that supermarket petrol is the cheapest to charge more and still expect people to buy regardless of the increased price.

Phil I think you are totally correct with what you said. Tescos would love to wipe out every small-medium sized business and have Tesco be a one stop shop for everything. At the end of the day Tescos specialise in food. Not in car entertainment, not in furniture, not in computers. They can try and enter these markets, but I think you have to be careful to buy something from Tescos when you can go to a specialised seller who will actually know about the product you are buying. Anyway, sorry for going off topic a bit.

I had a smile on my face yesterday as I passed the Tesco in Horwich as I went to fill up at asda. At Tesco Petrol was more than Diesel it hasnt been that way for years, diesel was always cheaper, at Asda they were the same price each but diesel was 2p cheaper than Tesco and petrol was 3p cheaper.

All I can say is thankfully I bought a car that gives me 50mpg, I just wish it was cheaper.

Tesco used to guarantee to be the cheapest and give you double the difference if you found it wasn't but they abolished that. They might have put prices up to cover all the cash in compensation for that dodgy petrol.

i dunno i've noticed it since xmas

the price always creeps up at least a day before other stations in the area top up their price.

but the OP is right. i've always used tesco for the reward points but i'm finding the once extortionate esso and shell garages are now the cheaper option (even when taking the points into account)

In Burton On Trent, Staffs there is aTesco supermarket with it's petrol station which sell unleaded for 94.9p/litre. Right opposite a Shell garage which is selling at 92.9p/litre last time I checked. Guess where I fill up from.

And I wonder how many people still queue at Tesco to fill up thinking it will be cheaper than elsewhere?
It's exactly the same in Uttoxeter, Tesco 95.9p/litre, nearby Esso and Shell 94.9p/litre for Diesel.
