If buyers wins the case ebay will tell them to send back tracked.
Then once delivery is shown as being attempted/ or delivered they will refund in full, you will have no choice it will be done automatically.
If the refund leaves your account with a negative balance ebay will then come after you for the money.

Make sure the buyer knows you have photos of YOUR item and the report from the Apple store. Don't refund unless you get the item back and he can prove receipt, eBay won't insist you do. No idea what happens if the item is returned but never received by you (you don't sign for it). If an item is returned that is not yours that must be fraudulent, you have the buyers address take out a small claims action.

If a dispute is opened and the item returned, the buyer doesn't normally have to prove that the goods were received by the seller, they simply have to show that an attempt was made to deliver, so refusing to accept the laptop could end up causing more problems as the buyer will then have the money and will get the laptop returned to them.

I do hope you have the serial number. Having said that if he is as good as he claims you will still have the same serial number but everything else changed.

Hintza that won't be a problem with a mac, it's not just a serial number on the casing like most products but also in the system software. Also if OP ever registered the mac Apple will have a record if the correct serial number linked to the account.

The mac airs (up to early 2010) had known problems with the hinges, up to the point that Apple would replace them. Late 2010 and the 2011 models had a better hinge assembly.

You can change the firmware serial number if you know what you are doing (admittedly this is beyond the average joe) ;)

All being an Apple Certified Technician means is that he has completed and passed the Apple training course. He has no ongoing business relationship with Apple.

If he is saying he is an Apple Authorised Service Provider then that is different as Apple have a business relationship in place for them to provide repair services on their behalf.
Totally agree, I am Apple certified and the easiest course I ever took, it is more about selling than fixing

eBay have taken money from my PayPal without my consent, luckily it is overdrawn and it was not yet taken from my bank account and card account, so I have cancelled these accounts. eBay have also told him to send back the MBA and he will get a refund once I have received the item...but I will not accept the delivery, and tell them to return to sender, so hopefully he will not get a refund

Check this op, I'm sure I've read that an attempted delivery with refusal from the seller will still gain the buyer a full refund.
