Help..Huge £1,300 plus bill for WAP calls

Options
Hi,

I have a company supplied mobile phone and the provider is BT.

Due to the fact we only have 100mb data usage allowance it appears that the "out of bundle" charges for data usage amounts to £2 per mb !.

This has resulted in a bill for £1,300 plus for the last month which my employers have hinted that they may be looking to me to reimburse.http://static.moneysavingexpert.com/images/forum_smilies/speechless-smiley-040.gif

The copy BT bill I have been sent shows numerous WAP connections sometimes 12 or more at exactly the same date/time and second and all for different durations. This happens at various different times of the day and night although not usually overnight.

I have tried questioning BT on this and they have tried telling me that the durations on the bill don't mean anything and that it's the phone downloading multiples of 3mb packets of data i.e there are 36mb of emails and so it splits that into 12 lots of 3mb and shows them downloading at the same date/time/second.

That doesn't make any sense as a) 36mb of emails by my reckoning equates to approx 720 emails which I wouldn't be receiving and b) if I added up all the times the bill records a multiple connection whilst "in bundle" at 3mb per occasion then the data allowance of 100mb would be used up in a couple of days (which it isn't it actually lasted about 2/3/rds of the month).

I know all the in and outs of apps working in the background etc aI don't think this relates to any of that as I don't use them any more but if anyone can help shed any light on what these multiple connections are and how on earth I could repeatedly have these "multiple connections" going on day and night that would be much appreciated i.e is there a known active sync bug with Microsoft Exchange that might cause the server to keep reloading emails?

By the way the phone is a Nokia Lumia 800 (Windows Phone 7) if that makes any difference.

Many Thanks

My OH's daughter had a Lumia 610 and in its first month, it consumed a huge chunk of data. Luckily, Talkmobile cut her service when she only owed £60 or so.

Before that, she was on Orange with an Android and was always well within her monthly data limit. Suspect automatic Windows upgrades doing some damage to the data allowance.

    Richard,

Yes it does download work emails from an Exchange Server using Outlook. There are 12 other phones on the same contract but they don't seem to have ths problem in that they have all stayed within the 100mb allowance

Hi Chris - did you ever get anywhere with this as we have a very similar problem where we have been billed £267.35 for 1x month for WAP calls against one of our work mobiles - and we have a 3mb data bundle on each phone. We are also with BT business for our mobiles.

We also have lots of identical WAP charges of £5.73 on the same date / time appearing on the bill.

The SIM in question for us is now in a iPhone4S. The user previously had it in a HTC android and we have never had this problemn before. We have a mix of Android phones and Windows Phones and we only have 1x iPhone and it's the iPhone user that this has happeded to.

I'm not convinced we are going to get anywhere with BT - pulling teeth is less painful and they also do not offer a facility that stops a user from going over the limit. So basically it sounds like we have no way to stop this happening again........unless anyone can advise otherwise.

I have been promised a call back from BT with an explanation so I expect I will get the same responce you had about multiple packets of data downloading at the same time - but this will not help me solved the problem.

The breakdown bill we get is useless as it only shows times and cost - not how much data has been used.

    Very annoyed......

This problem with Exchange Server has cropped up elsewhere in relation to iPhone battery life, from memory there is a failure to deliver mail and the server/phone keeps on trying and trying.

As I don't use Microsoft for mail, I haven't experienced it. There may have been a fix in one of the later iPhone software updates, in any case it's probably the same issue and a search for IOS and Exchange Active Sync may give you the answer.
  • Did you ever get any feedback from BT or a refund? We have just had a bill of £2400!

  • Just wanted to add that assuming that you have been using the phone for work purposes as intended, your company has no right to seek reimbursement from you. It's up to them to sort it out with BT.
  • Anybody had any luck with the huge bills received from BT ?? I have just had a huge shock after being with BT and their mobiles for about 4 years paying the same every month ( roughly £70 ) to receiving a bill for £2496.41 for 14 days charges of WAP !!! I am still in shock not sure what happened as I haven't done anything different ...
