dont replace worn CV boots, it's a waste of money, and you don't know if it's done damage to the bearings or not, if it has and you just replace the boot and regrease you may have problems down the line again.

It may be worth just replacing the axle, replacing the CV boot is labour intensive and doesn't garantee that you won't have problems later on by permanent damage to internals. A whole axle will be brand new and will be cheaper on labour. Axle cost something like £150, a cv boot cover, and bearings cost about £30 - but like I said already the cost may increase because it does take time to fit a new boot.

Really! Gosh, I hadn't thought that much would be needed. I thought, by what little I've read, that worst case scenario would be having to replace the CV in addition to the gaiter requirement from MOT

It'll take any competent spanner twiddler half an hour to break the two joints, clean the muck off, new grease and a new boot stretched on and the lot bolted back together, including brew up. No need to realign (unless it's out in the first place) as he's disturbing the track rod end to hub joint, not moving the tre up and down the threads.

CV boot around £5 - £10. The cost as stated above is in the labour. You can get a split boot kit for around £10 - £15 which involves no dismantling but that is only recommended if you are selling the car next week ;) Clio CV joints are surprisingly cheap as they do not come with the complete shaft, less than £30, so probably worth replacing it anyway.

It amazes me how people judge a car merely on age. Look back at a car's history. My CAR has been amazing to me, not the garage. One of the first times in a good few years it has actually failed at all. Whether that's down to being cared for from new (was my sister's, then mine), or just through luck, that car would be anyone's godsend (well anyone who appreciates a car not costing them a fortune lol) :)

Seems to be a few different opinions. Replacing the gaiter, replacing the axel.

Is this a matter of opinion, or overall is it advisable to replace the axel in order to avoid just 'putting a plaster' on the problem so to speak, only to encounter further related problems in the near future?

Don't be misled by changing the axle nonsense. Being charitable, perhaps they meant driveshaft which, if there was a special on at the factor, and would be a similar amount of labour to changing the CV joint/boot, wouldn't end up too much more expensive. (It would)!
If there was no clicking on lock and there is not a boot full of grit, the joint can be confidently cleaned out, repacked, rebooted and be thankful you've got a cheap MOT.

didnt realise the car had a front axle:rotfl::rotfl:

op, just get the gaiter(boot) replaced any wear on the cv joint would have been picked up by the mot man,
roughly an hours work and about 5/10 quid for the parts
