I'm really hoping someone can help me. I have a dress that I've never worn, bought from a well-known cheap high street store. I'd love to wear it out tonight, but cannot do the zip up. It's not that the dress is too tight, and the zip is not caught on any material. It's just a very stiff zip - I think because they sew the zip so close to the teeth IYKWIM.

    Any tips please?

    Thanks, JB x

if it's a metal zip try running a pencil over the teeth a few times I don't know why it works but it does

Alternatively, if the stitching really is preventing the moving part of the zip going far enough, you may need to restitch it.

What I'd do is turn the dress inside out and look at the stitching line to see where it's straying too close to the teeth of the zip. If it's only in one place, you can probably get away with just restitching that part of the zip, then pulling out the 'shop' stitching. If it's the whole length of the zip, you'll need take the whole zip out and put it in again.

Thanks guys. I'll try the pencil - I don't think I'm up to removing a zip and re-stitching though. It is the whole length of the zip, and the dress is a very fine white fabric.

You'll be putting graphite (i.e. pencil lead) on the zip. If the frock is fine white fabric, you will probably stain it. Try the baby powder first!

Hi there  There's an existing thread on sticky zips so I'll add this thread to that so that you can browse other ideas.

Please let us know which method works ;)

    Hello!

I left a large rucksack at my parents and they have been storing it in the shed. I've asked them to fish it out for me and they've discovered the zips are stuck.

It's one of those backpacker style ones and it was pretty expensive when I bought it. They have opened the main pocket and one of the side ones but there are still about 3 that are jammed shut.

Can anyone suggest anything they / I can do? They have tried WD40, furntiture polish and lemon juice I believe. I'm not concerned about staining it at all so any ideas are welcome!!
