Quiet delivery door knocks

I have been waiting all week for a parcel to come via DPD. I have been tracking it all the way from Germany and when I read online that my parcel was at a depot up the road I had my ear out for the door being knocked. Wondering if it had been sent for delivery I checked online. The status said "delivery unsuccessful". This was an error surely, so I checked the front door and shure enough there was a card through sorry we missed you. I know for certain that nobody knocked because I was downstairs listening. I am furious.

Call them now, they may still be in the area and could come back, say you need the item today....make a big noise until they give in.0

Pop down and pick it up if it is down the road when they get back from their round0

This has happened quite a few times for me, and it really confuses me. If they've got the parcel, surely it's easier for them to make sure that it's delivered?
I have to say that DPD are the only company I've never had problems with - I think they're excellent - but I have a dislike of ALL other mail delivery companies.
My thinking is that if they have the parcel, they're going to do their best to avoid taking it away again. I always wonder if someone's feeling lazy, can't be bothered to carry parcels around and simply isn't bothering, meaning that they just send a slip through. Still, that seems like only a little less effort for them, and barely worth it. If that were the case, what would happen if you opened the door, saw them writing out the slip and asked for your parcel?
Still, that's never as bad as stolen post. That's much more upsetting.0 -

I have a problem that some delivery operatives insist on knocking on the door (despite its having no knocker and a perfectly obvious bell push).
The problem is that in most of the house I can't hear a knock on the door whereas I can hear the bell everywhere. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -
They will automatically come back the next day so I will wait. I have emailed them with my complaint though. Definitely nobody knocked for sure. Perhaps they hope if they "miss" you you will upgrade to their £10 fast redelivery option.0
