As a man myself, perhaps put your hand in your pocket and give your testicles a flick, just smile and wave.

    That made me laugh :rotfl:

I am a cryer..but I do try to bite it back if necessary, and this is one of those times. I pinch my inner arm and the pain distracts me from the emotion of the moment. I usually use the technique at funerals during Eulogies. I would also wear dark glasses and maybe develop a "cold" today!!

    Good luck.

Maybe think how it would affect your daughter if she saw you crying.

How would you have felt if, as a 17 year old, your dad burst into tears in public in front of all your friends?

Frankly if it had happened to me, I would have been mortified.

Incidently, at any age, seeing your dad cry is a bad thing.

It only happened to me once. I was 44 at the time. My dad was my mums carer as she had dementia. But my dad was seriously ill, and frankly was dying. He cried because he knew he couldn't look after her anymore and it broke his heart.

That was a real reason for crying, but it was very difficult to watch.

Don't make your daughter have to go through those feelings on what should be a happy day for her.

At some points in your life you have to man up. I managed it, to help my dad, and as my name suggests, I'm not a man.

Sorry to be fairly tough, but sometimes things need to be said.

Your job as a parent is to prepare your child for the big bad world. That doesn't mean keeping them as children when they are almost legal adults.

She could have joined the army at 16, or been a parent herself.
Your reaction strikes me as overly needy of keeping your children with you. !!!!!! man up.

I have no idea why you aren't delighted to see your daughter going off for an adventure without you.

The thought that you are about to try and spoil it before it starts ought to be enough to persuade you to be whole lot less selfish.

I thought I'd said that I would like opinions on 'how to stop crying' not a lecture on when or why somebody should cry. I guess English (or your reading of it) is not your first language?

Andy, it isn't that I'm not delighted for her. If it wasn't for me and my wife encouraging her to go and paying a few thousand pounds (altogether) it wouldn't have happened.Of course I am. Just quite an emotional guy when it comes to family. I need to toughen up but that is why I was asking the question.

Every school play/assembly my kids had when they were at school had me crying like a loon.

I soon learned to look a bit, and look at my hands in my lap a lot.

All the christmas plays and assemblies ive sat through with all of my children and the feeling of bursting into tears never lessened.:(

There was other Mums, smiles, heads stretched to get a better look and i had to look into my lap.

Bad Mummy, i missed most of their finest moments.

Because it's nothing to do with the other post. Just that certain people are bringing the other thread into it. Just after a few tips really on how to hide emotions. As to why that really doesn't matter.
