Tips on not crying!

Try not to make this post on opinions please. But I'm due to wave my daughter off on a long haul trip tomorrow and really don't know how I can hide my tears. As a Dad this is important to me and I'd like to get her off in a happy mood with little fuss.

Any ideas?

Please don't take this the wrong way OP, but if other kids see a father crying like a baby then your daughter is likely to get the mickey taken out of her for the whole trip. This should be incentive enough to man up a bit, for her sake.

    Otherwise wear some dark glasses.

Try to distract yourself - maybe think of something other than what is making you emotional.

Maybe concentrate on wiggling your toes as a distraction technique. That's what I do to help control my blushing. It's one of those annoying things where you go bright red, get embarrassed about it, then everyone helpfully points out that you are bright red and make the situation even worse. I digress but toe wiggling can help for blushing so could help for crying.

P.S. I don't think it's a sign of weakness when a man shows emotion towards his child. But that's an opinion and you asked not to receive opinions ;)

Big fake smile and hold her Mum's hand tight -you can both bawl afterwards. (I hope her Mum *is* coming with you -or at the very least has a decent excuse and not laying a guilt trip on your daughter)

Most of us would "Do anything for our kids" This is one of those times

EDIT I use the toe wiggle too- it's amazingly effective :)

Keep saying to yourself that you,re happy you,ve been able to send her on this fabulous trip. Be happy for her and you wont feel so sad. if all else fails smile and wave happily through your tears.

As a man myself, perhaps put your hand in your pocket and give your testicles a flick, just smile and wave.

Maybe look at it not just as the immeadiate crying issue, but as a wider picture of outlook? For example, have something planned to do that you really look forward to with the rest of your family later that day, and similarly when your daughter comes back.

I am a cryer, and find that very uplifting music, that I move to and sing to helps boost my mood (and there are many more signals of distress than tears). Jumping in time with the beat and singing along to the pointer sisters singing JUmp is a pretty good one for me.....because you don't have to use much of your own generated joy and imagination to follow an instruction of JUMP and then bounce smaller jumps to time through the entire rest of the song. Plus you know you look a tit, so it's funny. If you can get others to join in all the better, :)
