nice one tolip - rome wasn't built in a day but small steps make a huge difference and will soon mount up. I agree about the car, i think we all have to treat ourselves otherwise we get bogged down and lose heart.

as i've said before too, dd won't notice purse strings being tightened whilst she's young but she sure will when she hits 10, 11, 12 and as a dad it's very hard to say no - but by then and hopefully much before the finances will be back on track.

ps. am i the only one who likes turbulence??? Off to Antalya on Friday and hope theres going to be some.....but not too much :))
  • Asp I like turbulence too. Flying is so boring apart from take off or landing, so a bit of turbulence wakes me up a bit!

i like to see the faces of other passengers who start to grip the armrests, how sadistic of me. and the occasional startled yelp makes me chuckle.
    i'm evil!!!
i once did that on the way to dublin though, not very nice when the shoe is on the other foot!

Cant beat a bit of old turbulence !

except when you are quite heavy and you accept the higher levels 40'000ft or even 41'000ft. You need it to be fairly smooth as you have very little margin between high and low speed stall at those levels and heavy weights !

But if you are around 30'000 to 37'000 then its never an issue, bump around as much as you like !

Then off course there is always pilot induced turbulence !!!

    Belts on !

i just had a thought about the whole "what the neighbours think" issue.
we bought a new car a few weeks ago, now everyone thinks we're minted - we are definitely not. we bought it cos the old car was starting to threaten conking out and the mileage was so high it would soon be worth next to nothing.
we were in a pub with my parents the other day and i told my dad i wouldn't be in a round because i didn't have much cash on me, but i gave him a fiver to get my drink while he was going to the bar.
he didn't want to take it but my mum told him that he should, "because they're raking it in". it was half joking but i still thought, "if you knew how much i have to pay off every month in my DFW quest"!!
  • Yes, appearances can be deceptive, can't they? It is frustrating if people think you have plenty of money when you don't. They probably just think we are being tight!

I'm £38.000 (2 loans and lots of cards) in debt. I'm still able to pay all the payments for now. (just) and am Snowballing my payments, throwing all I can at them, and trying to be very money savvy. They are coming down SLOWLY, but hey! down is better than UP right? Light bulb moment - Jan 2007

I've just come across your thread and wanted say a huge well done on your progress in your quest to become DF! My DH is insistent that most people are in a comparable situation to us financially but being British we don't discuss finances. None of our family or friends have any idea of our situation, our kids are having a bit of a shock at the mo' as we've always said yes to them if at all possible, I agree it's best to sort this out whilst your little one is still little!

I love turbulence - it's like goig on a roller coaster for free :j

With regards to people thinking you are minted - I know exactly what you mean. We are going away next weekend with all the family and one of the nights we have to stay in B&B, but my brother and his family are being put up by relatives. When I said that it wasn't fair as we had to pay, he said "well you can afford it, you're absolutely loaded (ha! ha!)" aarrgghh!!
When you were born, you were crying and everyone around was smiling. Live your life so at the end, you're the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying! :rotfl:
  • I agree with Redfaced, young children are happy with a day at the park along the road, you are wise sorting out the debt now as the happy with the simple will soon change to "I'm NOT going there, and can I have £20, Dad?"!
