Two questions on debit cards

I think the last 2 digits are more to do with the account type.
71 may be a Standard account 91 the Reward accounts and i'm not sure what is on the Ultimate Reward Accounts.
The CashCard account also starts 4462 and i'm guessing this is an online card as its for kids.
No's 5 & 6 refer to Auth all or not.
As I said "they may have a large range of numbers, that do or do not work."
And as you said diffrent account may have diffrent numbers 5&6.
I have a plain halifax current acc.
No's 2 to 7 relate to the card provider.Never ASSUME anything its makes a>>> A55 of U & ME <<<0 -

That makes no sense to read, and is also not true. Digits 2 and 7 are completely irrelevant on their own.
The only thing that makes a card online or offline is a code in the chip
Its called the Positive Authorization Mandatory (X2X) Service Code
If its set to X2X the card will be online. If its set to X0X it is offline.
There is no way to see the code, some banks use a numbering system for their various types of codes. But plenty of them don't.0 -

A Magstripe reader reads the magstripe though, not the chip?!0 -

Yeah totally plausible owning own of those...
yes officer I have a Mag Stripe reader, I need to be sure my card will work on Virgin Trans you see
.... and those bunch of blank cards over there are just in case I loose this one.0 -

But as I said 2 TO 7... That gives you the aquiring bank..NOT 2 & 7....

.
But Joe public do not have a chip reader. So cannot tell.
No's 5 & 6 give you the chance to see if the card is a Auth ALL or not.Never ASSUME anything its makes a>>> A55 of U & ME <<<0 -

The magstripe also has the authorisation service code on it as well.
If someone did actual care that much you could probably buy one off ebay.0 -
My Halifax card is 446291 and its contactless and works at Pay@Pump.

Mine and my gf's is 446291 and neither are contactless, hers works at pay@pump and mine didn't, although that may have been the pump itself.0 -

Numbers 5 & 6 are the Bank Identifer.
4(visa)XXX (card type) XX (Originating Bank)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Issuer_Identification_Numbers
Lots of banks share the first 4 digits, and then the next to make them unique to the bank.
http://www.barclaycard.co.uk/business/documents/pdfs/bin_rules.pdf
Nationwide and RBS are 4751 for some of their cards, then the next 2 say which bank they are from.
HSBC and Barclays have 4658 and 4659 etc
5(Mastercard
3(amex)
6(maestro)
I do agree that some banks use Bin numbering to tell the difference, but they also use cards different colours
eg RBS cards with digits 5 and 6 [28] are Full Auth, but the cards are also green/blue instead of navy.
You cannot tell from a HSBC debit card if you've got a full auth or a offline one as the Numbers are the same and the cards look the same.0 -

I would think that it was just a case of a faulty pump to be honest, If you qualify for a Halifax account you qualify for the offline card, theres no in between with their full accounts.
Its the same with Lloyds. Unless you have the basic account their cards are all offline too.0
