A fairer system for dealing with offences of speeding

Ok as a lot probably know I have another thread on going about whingeing speeders when they are caught fair and square. It is apparent that many people think that the penalties for marginal excessive speed is unduly harsh.; We can all moan about being caught going 5mph over the speed limit and being hit with a £60 fine and 3 points on our licence but it is'nt going to do any good. However we do live in a democracy and people power can bring about changes.
Just to start the ball rolling I will make a suggestion for penalties for speeding, please contribute with your own
30mph- travelling at less than 37 mph 1st time offender- written warning, any subsequent offences fine only, as a suggestion £30-£60.
- travelling 38-42 mph 2 points and fine
- travelling 42-46 mph 5 points and fine
- travelling 46-50 mph 6 points and fine
(initial figures to get the ball rolling)
These figures could then be replicated for the other limits for a sliding scale of warnings, points and fines for the other limits.
Please make as many contributions as you can and you never know, if we can get an impressive consensus perhaps pressure could be brought upon the decision makers to make it a fairer system.

It's such a big job I can see why many have given up before they started.
38 in a 30 would mean an indicated 40 on the speedo, so I reckon you could pull the limits down for the 30.
Really, to do the job properly there would have to be a review of the limits on various roads. In my area about 80% of the limits seem sensible, but there are several places where you have to question the intelligence of those setting them.Happy chappy0 -

Now, if you had said that perfectly sensible statement in your OP in the other thread YOU wouldn't have come across as a sanctimonious whinger !
You are however continuing with the erroneous idea that speed cameras catch people traveling at "excessive speed" - they don't ! Six people in an overloaded Fiesta doing 55mph in the dark and wet (on a 60 mph road) is "excessive" and quite possibly highly dangerous. Doing 35 mph in a 30 mph zone on a clear dry road may be breaking the speed limit - but in many cases it cannot be described as excessive. THIS is what p****s off the vast majority of the motoring public, they get fined for a minor infringement by a camera, and yet they still see the lunatic few driving with total disregard for their own, and other's safety. Meanwhile the few traffic police we have left are back in the station having a lecture on 'diversity'.
A much better system is a good b********g and a finger wagging from a real policeman.0 -

It was'nt said in my other thread as it was on a different topic as you know if you bothered to read it, thats why I have started this one. I don't really know why I'm bothering to reply if you have nothing positive to add to the post.0 -

I'm sorry ! I thought your other thread WAS about speeding.
Also, I thought I did have something positive to add to this thread - an alternative to the mass indiscriminate use of speed cameras as a means of raising revenue.
You actually are a sanctimonious whinger !0 -

Thanks for trying to ruin the thread0 -
Trying to bring decent discussion back to this...
As I alluded on the original thread, I think this should be linked into a discussion on appropriate speed limits being reviewed as well.
Maybe the sanctions should remain the same but the limits altered
e.g. areas around schools to all have an automatic 20mph limit imposed between 8am & 9pm (to cover the use of schools outside school hours)
motorways to raise to 85-90mph
dual carriageways to 80mph
the 'national speed limit' on country lanes to be reduced from 60 to 30mph.Gwlad heb iaith, gwlad heb galon0 -
Fair system of fining...
£5 and 1 point for every 2 miles over the speed limitDoing 35 mph in a 30 mph zone on a clear dry road may be breaking the speed limit - but in many cases it cannot be described as excessive. As I was informed on the previous thread that speeding was not always bad driving.....IMO Breaking the driving law is bad driving so if you are breaking the speed limit and therefore the law you are driving badly. The "Bloodlust" Clique - Morally equal to all. Member 10

There are two things I'd like to see:
1) A fine but no points for the first offence in any three year period, on the basis that anyone can make a mistake.
2) Speed limit signs where the limit changes and countdown signs where the limit changes significantly (e.g national to 40mph or 30mph). This is to give people a reasonable amount of time to slow down without having to brake heavily.
Other than that, it can stay as it is. I agree with the people who say that the best way to avoid offending is to not speed, but the HA and councils could make it easier by making the limits on some roads more obvious. It does annoy me that you get no right turn signs on roundabouts to make sure you don't go round the wrong way, but there are some roads where you are expected to guess the limit or work it out by the distance between street lamps.0 -
I can see where people are coming from looking to avoid points but I happen to disagree.
What annoys me is not the Police issueing speeding tickets like toilet roll after a bad chinese. It's the fact they make so much damn money from doing so - which makes everyone query thier motives. (Profit?)
If the speeding campaign is all about saving lives - then do so, just dont make millions of quid from the alreay over taxed motorists. Those that continue to speed will loose thier licence or pay higher insurance (which makes sense). Those that make 'an honest mistake' will see the 3 points drop off thier licence in 3 years and not have to pay for thier mistake. Most insurance companines do not charge for having 3 points.0 -

I do not see how my perfectly valid points can be described as "trying to ruin the thread".
Both of the threads WERE about speeding - as were my responses.
YOU referred to people who have been fined for speeding as "whingers".
YOU, then, in another thread admit that perhaps these people are somewhat harshly treated by a system that many believe is geared solely to raise revenue.
If you start a thread on a fairly contentious subject, you must expect differing views; when you get these it isn't much good complaining that people who disagree with you are ruining your thread.
