Since you're still trying to decide:
A couple of years ago I missed the bottom couple of steps of our stupidly steep staircase in the dark, slipped, and went knee-first into a doorframe at the bottom, then catapulted backwards over an armchair. I felt like a complete twit.
That was early on Sunday morning. I iced my knee, elevated and rested it for the Sunday. On Monday morning I could put weight on it but couldn't walk properly and it was swollen and painful, so I went to my GP, who gave me a very old fashioned look and sent me off to the hospital for an x-ray. The cap who did the x-ray asked me how I'd got to the doctors surgery that morning and looked quite shocked when I said I'd walked (hobbled). Turned out I'd broken my kneecap and done enough ligament damage that I was on crutches for 6 weeks afterwards.
Go and get x-rayed
If you lend someone £20 and never see them again, it was probably £20 well spent...0 -
I'm offering a new service. Phone me up, stick the injured part of your body next to the phone (it gives off vibes you know) and I'll diagnose breaks, sprains or simple bruising over the phone!
Jeez, how would we know (not to mention it's against forum rules to give medical advice anyway)? Go see a doctor."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -
I did the same and found I had broken my 5th metatarsal (ie bone to toes). I was in a walking cast/boot for about 3 months! But at least I was mobile and was allowed to drive our automatic car!0

Go to the hospital - that is what they are there for.
There's no point in being afraid - nothing they do to it will be worse than you've already done.0 -
How do you expect anyone to know what damage you have done?? Go to A&E, that's what they are there for.Hi all,
Stupid clumsy me feel the last few steps on our stairs yesterday afternoon with washing in my hand. My right foot twisted in. I had converse trainers in. Pain, stream and shout and didn,t know whether to laugh or cry.
Sat on the sofa from 3.30pm onwards, took ibrofen and pain killers. I can hope on it, wiggle my toes but the swolling today is huge. You can see a bruise already around the bone of my ankle and the side of my foot. I got a walking stick as I definately need it.
So, is it a waste of doctors time to go to.a.e.? I can really do without this as I also have 3 kiddies and my hubby has to work.
ThanksIf you change nothing, nothing will change!!0 -
afternoon all,
Okay, went to a & e at 7.pm last night. Quite a few in there but I was seen within half and hour and home by 9pm. Pretty good going.
Doctor I seen said as I could, hop, hold my weight on it then it was highly unlikely I had broken it. Checked the whole leg and said to have an x ray. They where really concerned about the swelling although the bruise has hugely come out.
Results come back that I had actually SPRAINED MY ANKLE. Reliefed to be honest with you. The staff in the hospital was amazing and said they hear it all the time with women juggling so much.
Went back to see the original doctor who said it was vital that I rest as much as I can within the next 48 hours and put my foot up really high on cusions. Continued to take 3 ibrufen and the usual pain killers aswell.
So, am sat here with a coffee, two youngest playing with lego and marble run and my eldest is with my sister in law. My hubby is in work but coming home pretty early to sort out washing/tea and cleaning the house and kids. Really difficult just sat her and looking around thinking what I had to do , BUT i know I got to go by the professionals otherwise it will definately take much longer to heel.
I am feeling really tired again but I think it has knocked me for six and plus the tablets.:A Tomorrow's just another day - keep smiling0 -
You have my sympathies OP! I fell off some gym equipment at school and after waiting hours in A&E it turned out it was a bad sprain. I was so painful I was convinced it was broken at the time!
It does make sense what the doctor said about being able to hop and put weight on it. I wasn't allowed to leave when I had my injury, so I had no choice but to carry on dragging myself to lessons and walking home at the end of the day!0 -
oh my days, and I thought mine was bad..lol
Did you go to the hospital??
No.. I couldn't have an xray so just carried on.. it isn't a rare event for me I have silly floppy ankles so do it a lot.
I'd probably go to hospital if I had a very obvious break but they just make me bad tempered so I don't go.
My 84 year old nanna walked into the hospital a few months ago with a broken femur.Being able to bear weight is not a very good way to rule out a break.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
Might sound a little bit strange OP - but for bruising/swelling - I find those migraine strips are really good (my mum had her foot stamped on by a horse - I made her put one on and it worked really well, hardly any bruising the next day - and it helped with the pain) - I've used them when I've fallen off a horse as well!
