How can I tell I'm buying a genuine Apple phone charger

The newer Lightning connectors on the latest Apple devices have chips in them, this may limit the current, so the charging speed may be altered by the cable, that's not that relevant to you but something others may be able to comment on as well.

I've had chance to read your post in more detail and do a bit of investigation. I understand this much more now so thanks for explaining it in a different way.

I had a look at my 4th generation iPad and I see its shown as 2.4A on that charger now (but still showing as approved for use with the iPhone as well).

Posting the pics is so helpful. Thank you. My glasses/sight couldn't pick out the info on my ipad charger so I've used the iPhone to photograph it and can see its a 2.1 amp charger.
So I have now established that I don't need to buy so many new chargers but need to buy some cables and they don't have to be Apple but need to be a bit better than the ones i bought off eBay from china. I've ordered a griffin charger and will buy some more cables this weekend.

Simple, go to the apple store, I don't think they'll have any fakes in there :L

Apple store or Apple on line. Or a store that is an authorised Apple re-seller if you want non-Apple stuff that should work and be approved? Apple store also stocks other brands (e.g. Belkin) so that should be ok with the appropriate product.

I bought Griffin on the end. Excellent they are as they are made different,y at the weak point. £15 off Amazon.
