How can I tell I'm buying a genuine Apple phone charger

A more accurate explanation is that the rubber that the wires run thru is wearing. It wears just at the junction of the bit that goes into the iPhone. It splits and becomes a hole. Eventually the bare wires inside start to show and start to create loose connections so you have to make sure your iPhone & the charger is lying flat so that the charger isn't pulled down by gravity and encouraging a loose connection.

You mean the cable I guess not the charger. Apple chargers are just the triangular plug with a USB on them, do you mean that or the cable?

To be honest I've had cheap ones fail but not Apple ones. if it's just the cable I buy spares in pound land type stores and have a few around (work car home ) in case I need one.

How are you treating them, if they are repeatedly failing in the same way it sound like your being a little rough on them, is it someone in the house removing them by pulling the wire not the connector?

Repeatedly coiling the charger cable up (around the charger quite tightly?) will strain the cable and cause it to split. Doesn't matter what brand of charger you buy.
    Consider an armoured cable? ;)

Also check your power supply - if it is constantly over voltage products fail faster. Last year I had to complain I was receiving a feed of 265v AC. This situation lasted for 3 months.

Yes you are right. It's the cable not the triangular plug. The triangular plugs are in great condition. My cable does last longer than the boys but then its only me using it. They're not rough with it but they are in constant use between the two of them but 3 people are using the same one at Grandmas so they are being used double or more really and constantly being pulled out to put the other persons on charge! That's why i bought spares for everyone to have but those cables haven't lasted 5 mins before the square things at the end drop off! I'll buy some spare cables as you suggest but they may also not last if they are cheaper versions but I'll give it a try. Will they give a fast charge though as the triangular bit is Apple but the cable isn't?
    Thanks for your help.

Good point but funnily enough they don't do that as the charger and cable don't really go anywhere with the exception of this weekend. I suspect the one taken this weekend was coiled round. I'll see them at the weekend so I'll watch them unpack when they arrive and see how their chargers have been packed! Grandma is known for doing that so I'll have a good look at hers! Then I'll point it out so they are aware. I think I will repossess them all this weekend and re issue new ones & take the original ones back to Apple to see what their view is as I might be able to swing a visit there if I persuade them all we could have a good day out lol! Mind you a day out there will cost me more than brand new chargers for everyone lol

Ps it's grandma who needs an armoured cable lol - not a bad idea

How do I know the power supply I am using and what I should be using. I have an ipad charger with me at the moment as I bought an ipad2 last April. Where the cable meets the square bit that you plug in the iPhone or ipad there is a tear in the cable so you can see the wires and around the tear it is brown as if its burnt. Why would that be do you think? How would I know its because I'm over voltage? How did you know you were receiving 265v AC? I know very little about electricity (other than don't mess with it!) so I couldn't even tell you if 265 you mention is good or bad :(

Sorry to everyone that I'm doing individual posts but I don't seem to be able to quote everyone in one reply! I don't really know how to do it.

Charging ampage is what you need not voltage.

30 pin cables are just cables, no electronics. The Apple charger outs out (I think) .2 amp so as long as the cable is not shorting it won't alter that at all.
  • Apple phone electric battery Charger senses when its electric batteries are finished charging and mechanically decreases the allowance of power it desires. In addition, the reusable electric batteries that arrive with each apple phone Battery Charger are conceived to maintain a high charge capability for hundreds of charges, so you no longer have to buy new electric batteries or toss them every few months.

Is this some sort of automated response? Judging by the English it is. Wonder what it is trying to achieve?
Just look at its other posts. :rotfl:
