NATEST sent my bank details to another customer

Options
Hi, I'm wanting some advice really.

A while back I received a phone call from a chappie (fellow NATWEST customer) in Manchester who had my name, bank account number and sort code. It had been sent to him in a letter addressed to him!!! I had recently registered my mobile phone with them as it's insured under my bank account.

I rang NATWEST and they put the phone down on me so I emailed instead with all the details.

They said that they would complete an investigation. I get letters through the post every 2 weeks or so saying investigation continuing.

They are just fobbing me off. It's a damn disgrace what they did.

Where do I go from here?

Thanks:(

If you're past 8 weeks from your first complaint take them to the FOS.

There could be £200ish at the end of this.

Has it been 8 weeks since you made your initial complaint?

If it has then get in touch with the FOS http://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/consumer/complaints.htm and they will investigate.

If it was more than 8 weeks after making the complaint, yiu can go to the Financial Ombudsman Service But apart from that, you will have to wait.

NW ha a large number of complaints going through several months ago, and I left them before both meltdowns, so that number could have increased significantly.

I understand that you want to squeeze some money from the bank, but what they did was not a big deal. Your name, account number and sort code are not a top secret and are printed on all your cheques that you give to random people and companies.

Sending a bank statement to a wrong person would be a more serious issue as a statement can be used for proving ID.

Totally agree with Grumbler, not a big deal, nothing top secret. People will complain about anything these days if it means there could be a chance of ££££££
  • Thank you for your replies.

Grumbler and Mr Silk, again, thank you for your reply. However, no where in my email does it state I am after financial gain or complaining to get compensation. I merely wish for an explanation as to how this happened.

Contrary to what you said Grumbler, I believe it is quite a big deal as NATWEST are in breach of of customer confidentiality and have broken their customer charter.

I will have to see whether it is 8 weeks ago. I feel it may be 6.
Again, thank you all for your replies.

    Somebody made a mistake.

What other explanation could there be?

But don't move to Nationwide because they once lost a laptop containing customer details.

And don't move to Yorkshire Bank because they once breached the DPA on my account.

And don't move to...well, wait and see who hasn't ever had an issue with a bank over their DPA responsibilities.

Sending something to the wrong customer is clearly a big deal. What if they sent a replacement debit card to the wrong person?

In these exact circumstances nothing overly terrible occurred, but it's the act of sending something to someone other than intended that is bad.

I presume they didnt just send it to an old address and you forgot to give them your new address? If so I think you're right to ask for an explanation. Yes, mistakes happen, but if we didnt complain they would probably happen a lot more often!
