Can anyone please help advise me....my son drove to Aberystwyth yesterday to collect his sister from uni and bring her home to Warwickshire. Weather forecast for the A44 is dire, snow seeiming particularly bad around the Rhyader, Kington , Leominster area. I know he will try to drive back later today in the "sure and certain knowledge " that the snow ploughs will be out as it is the main arterial uk to wales route. I am scared witless and want them to stay put until tomorrow but obviously me being here and them there am powerless, so my only weapon is knowledge.....can anyone in the area please tell me what road conditions are really like so that we have more to go on than the weather report? How good are the councils involved at keeping the A44 clear when bad weather has struck before?
Thank you so much for reading and for any input you can offer.

I'm not far from Leominster. I can say that the A456 from Leominster to Birmingham is awful. We had 4 snow ploughs out last night (!) and one actually got stuck on the hill outside my house for a while.
I would suggest he delays the journey til tomorrow, perhaps?0 -
You could try listening to BBC Hereford and Worcester online for their travel updates too, they're pretty thorough.0

I dont live in the area but if they do decide to attempt the journey they would be wise to have some provisions in the car. My parents would worry about me just as you are. After getting caught out in bad weather himself years ago, my dad has always said to me to make sure to wear warm clothing, extra layers in the car, blankets, hot drinks in flasks, things to eat that will keep you going and a shovel. Also making sure you have a full tank of petrol and that the oil is not running low.
I hope they have a safe journey OP and that someone in the area will be along shortly to reassure you.The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. Could he come back via Shrewsbury? Those roads will be clear. They were completely clear yesterday, just a lot of water as a hazard. They have been gritted and well used.
Try not to worry, I know this is so much easier said than done. You have brought them up to make sensible and responsible decisions and this is what they will do. I think it's much harder worrying about someone in the unknown that just driving carefully yourself.0 -

It makes sense to stick to the main routes. The roads are more likely to be clear and, if they do get stuck, there's more chance of help getting to them.0 -
Thanks for further replies, train not an option as son wont leave his car (needs it for work as we live in a rural area). Have drummed it into him over and over about food, clothing etc in car and I did put blankets in there myself. Shrewsbury route no good as he would still need to come through some areas of snow......did I say he has only been driving 3 months and this is the longest journey he has done? :eek:People Say that life's the thing - but I prefer reading

I wondered if he may be a new driver. Is he with any road recovery service just in case he has problems and gets stuck? Another bit of advice which I am sure he will think of already but make sure his phone is charged up and that he has his in car charger in case his journey takes longer than expected. The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. Bear in mind the snow is affecting the mobile signal locally.
I really would advise using the largest roads possible, but if they get stuck with flasks of coffee and other supplies, they have a cold, unpleasant but not life threatening night and have learnt that sometimes mum is right to worry.0
