I'm taking it out on irresponsible speeding motorists. Read the original post again
It's not a light at the end of the tunnel, it's a man with a torch and more jobs
Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool.0 -
I think oldbill was trying to say stop WHINGING when you do get a ticket. Ditto parking fines - park on a double yellow, single yellow, bus lane, red route, crossing don't be surprised when you get a ticket !
Rob a bank don't be amazed if you get caught, stab your OH ....blah blah...0 -

Cases in point:
- single carriageway A roads where the only straight sections in 10 or more miles have speed cameras on them.
- single carriageway A roads which have occasional overtaking 2 lane sections which are now ALL fitted with speed cameras.
There has to be some realism - it is safer to overtake 3 cars travelling at 50mph on a single carriageway road at 70mph than at 60mph, because you are on the wrong side of the road for half as long. And it's incredibly safe to overtake in an occasional 2 lane section at 70mph (or for that matter 90mph) rather than having to do so on a less safe single carriageway section because only ONE car could get past in the entire 2 lane section because of the poxy speed camera.0 -
the one thing that's worse than people whinging when they get a ticket for speeding is the 'i've never exceeded the speed limit in my life and you speeders will kill somebody one day' brigade.0

I have to put up with my wife moaning about the speed I'm driving at.
Guess which of us currently has 3 points for speeding?
(Clue: it's not me.)

Yippee - competition time ! My licence is coming up for its 50th birthday with null points ! It always makes me grin when some dipstick races past me breaking the speed limit and I pull up at the next set of lights right behind him without having to break the limit..................
....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

I fail to see the argument that speed cameras make roads less safe, if we are taking it that drivers slam on the brakes when they see a camera ( had they been recognizing the speed limit, they wouldnt have had to slam on when they see a camera.) This is not a reasonable case because we all know the speed limits and let us not forget that they are maximum speed limits and there is nowhere in law which says you have to drive to the maximum limit.0

Great feeling isn't it0 -
Only today there was a report in the press that there is growing evidence that the over reliance on speed cameras is now causing an increase in road casualty figures. The authorities are showing reluctance to investigate this because of the vast amounts of money being raised by speed cameras.
The problem is with this (as with other emotive topics) that many facts and figures are bandied about, but with scant regard for telling the 'whole story'.
"Speeds kills". Of course it does - if vehicles had no speed, they wouldn't move, therefore no road accidents.
"Speeding is involved in over 30% of road accidents". Yes and no - what does speeding mean here ? Driving too fast for the prevailing conditions - YES.
Exceeding the speed limit - NO. (this is estimated to be less than 5%)
I have no problem driving by my local school at 30 mph - if only ! I'm lucky if I can do 5 mph when the kids are there.
However, why does that speed limit still apply at 6 o'clock on a Sunday morning in July ?
There are bad drivers on the road, but speed cameras will do nothing except gather cash and alienate the vast majority of motorists, who get caught at 34mph in a 30 mph zone.
We need more traffic police - not cameras. Have you noticed that the Police have all but disappeared from the Motorways as well now !
Finally 'oldbill' says: I fail to see the argument that speed cameras make roads less safe
Perhaps he could explain why a Norfolk farmer was recently threatened with prosecution, by the present 'bill', for erecting a yellow 'bird box' along side a busy road. He was told by PC Plod that it looked like a speed camera and it could cause accidents by motorists braking when they saw it !! Obviously, real speed cameras don't have this effect.0 -
The difference in arrival time at destination between driving at 30 and 34 is absolutely minimal, so what's the point in breaking the limit ? Or is it merely lack of self control..................
