I think its clear from this thread that there are many different views and opinions regarding the issue of speeding, as has been mentioned previously we need to have speed limits set down in stone so that everyone knows where they stand. We all make a concious decision on the way which we choose to drive. If we are saying that on times it is a safe and the proper thing to do, to travel in excess of the speed limit where would the judicial system be. Law is a difficult enough subject as it is whithout throwing in all the other variables such as 'It was 3am your worship and there no other cars about' thats a dangerous precedent to start taking in my view.
My whole point about this is if a concious decision is made, to go above the speed limit and you get caught you have to bite the bullet.
Like them or loath them we have laws, without them we have anarchy and a totally confused criminal justice service.0 -
but i think a sensible point to make is that clockwatching do-gooders who moan cos someone does 30.1 mph and is watching the road more than their speedo give everyone anti-speeding a bad name.
i drive at 35mph on 30mph roads, wow, who cares, try catching the idiot who screamed passed me at 50+mph and stop picking on easy targetsthings arent the way they were before, you wouldnt even recognise me anymore- not that you knew me back thenMercilessKiller wrote: »BH is my best mate too, its ok

The problem with the speed limits in this country is that they're just too low.
I do, generally, agree with this "the law is the law" attitude that a lot of people take, but the fact of the matter is that the law is only given power if it's reasonable and people respect it.
Many speed limits in this country are utterly unreasonable and as such, people don't respect them. Sat on a motorway, in the dead of night, dry road, not another car visible etc, a motorist has to ask themself the following question: "do I stick to the speed limit...for *absolutely* no reason whatsoever, or do I put my foot down and get to bed half hour earlier?". A number of people chose the former, a number the latter.
The idea of laws, let's not forget, is to stop people from doing things *wrong*. If anyone's *seriously* suggesting that there's nowhere in the country you can safely go above the speed limit, without messing up traffic flow etc etc then, frankly, they're having a laugh. (I love that nobody ever thinks the government get *anything* right, except for speed limits, where a large amount of the country seem to think they're utterly perfect...) There *are* places where it's perfectly safe to go above the speed limit and as such when you do, you're not doing anything wrong...and if youre not doing anything wrong, it feels unjust to be punished for it...
So, the answer, clearly, is to set up more reasonable speed limits (both maximum and minimum), keep them under review, then punish anyone that breaks them...0 -

The trouble is if you push up the speed limits you would still have the same people willing to go that little bit over the higher limits and then moan when they get caught at only going a few miles an hour of the new limit, where do you stop.
What are your proposed speed limits ?0 -

A couple of points to respond to, I don't think you will find anyone moaning at someone for going 30.1 mph, as for do gooders I suppose you mean those who obey the laws of the land, is that a bad thing to have people respecting laws.
As for saying wow who cares if you drive at 35mph in a 30 mph area, the person who gets knocked down will probably care a lot.
I appreciate that you don't care about going slightly over the limit, but I would be interested to know what your reaction would be for getting caught doing so.
Why make yourself an easy target ?0 -
Having read your above 2 replies Bill I'm confused as to what you think the answer is?
You say it's pointless in raising the speed limits, but still want people to sit back and take a reaming from the coppers when they get caught slightly over an existing speed limit without fighting back.
I know you're going to come back with "It's the law of the land etc etc" so before you do I'm off to start a thread entitled "Don't come whining to me when you stick your wifes head in an oven - it's against the law and you know it, you naughty scamp"It's not a light at the end of the tunnel, it's a man with a torch and more jobs
