Going to look at puppies

I'm another one that didn't have a problem getting a rescue dog, first one I didn't meet until we drove down to Wales from Edinburgh to pick her up but she was an oldie and might have been hard to re-home, she was a pure bred sheltie who had been shown. When she died I got another pure bred dog, this time I got a Bichon from Many Tears, Ellie had been used in a puppy farm to churn out pups for most of her 3 years. I wouldn't condemn any one for getting a pup from a breeder as that's how I got my first two dogs but never again will I take on a pup, all future dogs ( if I have any more )will be rescues.
Just had a look on the Many tears website and found this wee soul, not pure bred but very very gorgeous http://www.manytearsrescue.org/display_mtar_dog.php?id=63100 -
Most important fact to me is that loving dogs and puppies, so desperately in need of love and care, are being put down every day. If that means I'm a fundamentalist, so what, I'm simply getting back to the fundamental idea that dogs should not be killed daily.
Nothing wrong with rescuing a pedigree. When I chose my last dogs, I took everything that was due to be pts that day, and one was a GSD,
Then you rehome them all. Don't demand that other people take an animal on that doesn't fit their circumstances just because you don't like it that they don't want a unknown rescue dog.
Some people want to get a puppy from a breeder - get over it.0 -

Honestly, I have to say, I think some of the criticism of rescues we hear so much of is excuses.
I know loads of people with rescue dogs, they aren't holding them all hostage! If one says no, either reason with them or go to another, there are hundreds, and places like Battersea and Manchester Dogs Home are practically rescue dog shops, just show up and take one away. How much easier could it be?
I was just making the point that many of these rescues make what should be a relatively simple process very complicated and sometimes it doesn't seem that they are putting the interests of the dogs first.Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time :eek:0 -
I've just looked through all the dogs available on the many tears site and my heart is breaking for them. Some beautiful pups on there, seem to be springer x collies, they are just gorgeous.0

Just read this post with interest as we bought a border terrier puppy 5 weeks ago from a private breeder who yes advertised online, shock horror! However the tale begins before that. Our previous dog was a cross bread bought privately from an ad in a local paper (per internet days), she lived until she was 17 and was a very special dog, a true member of our family. 18 months after she died we made a family decision we wanted another dog and the time seemed right, and this time decided we would really love to give a rescue dog a loving home for lots of the reasons people have expressed on here. We registered with our nearest dogs trust and they contacted us a week or so later to say they had a dog that was a good match. We visited and really liked the dog, had a trial day and decided we would adopt her. As she 'settled' into our home her true traits began to become more apparent, in particular she was aggressive and this became quite unmanageable outside the house when we walked her. We contacted a dog trainer/behaviourist who advised us the dog didn't know it was doing anything wrong but had some quite serious issues which would take months of training with no guarantee. We made the decision that with this was not the dog for us, we have 2 kids and a cat and that was too risky with the way the dog was behaving. It was a really upsetting experience taking her back but dogs trust were fine with us about it. I checked a week later and the dog was readvertised but specified as must be only pet and no kids. The whole experience made me feel like a failure and as an animal lover very guilty. A month later we by chance found our puppy, the breader had sold all 5 pups but one had become available due to the original buyer pulling out for health reasons. I rang the KC first who check the breeders crudentials for me, yes we paid alot of money for our new boy but he is a healthy, happy puppy who has bought us lots of joy and can be trained to our lifestyle from a very young age. Rescue are not always right, in my case maybe they didn't do enough checks but you will often never know the dogs history which is risky. To the people who say don't buy from a pet shop or online where are you supposed to go if you want a puppy?? I saw my pup with his mum, bros and sis, sister from a previous litter they kept and another dog, plus 2 cats and their kids. We have kept in tough with the breeder she text us every day for the 1st week to ask how he was, yes she made money from selling puppies but seemed like a genuine person who cared about her animals and where the pups went, not all breeders are horrible people. lee111s enjoy your puppy hope he brings you lots of happiness0

Luckystar I had something similar happen to me when I first wanted a dog and yes I did go to a breeder after my experience, I hope now that I'll never go to a breeder again, you had a horrible experience but it shouldn't put you of trying rescues again in the future. In your case to an extent I blame the rescue centre for not assessing the dog properly, you'll find a lot of the smaller rescues spend time to make sure they re home their animals to the right people. Please never ever go to a pet shop for any kind of animal, no reputable breeder would sell animals to shops even the smallest of animals will more than likely come from farms where they're treated terribly. If you're on facebook have a look at get gumtree animal free.
