If there were no responsible breeders, it would be a disaster for the dog population as a whole.

I'm as much an advocate of rescue as anybody, but there's a time and a place and a better way of getting other people on board than berating them!

I have two rescued pedigrees, not sure what that makes me in your eyes!

    Agreed.

Do the same people that want pedigree dogs expect other people to judge them themselves on appearance , health and pedigree first and foremost. I would never judge a person by who their parents were, so why should an animal be judged the same way.

It's not "judging" though is it? I think it's called personal preference (or choice) whether that be looks, breed traits, maintenance or whatever you want to add in.

I have my preferred type & that's what I have till the day they die!

Buying puppies isn't a sin. Buying them on a whim, without knowing the 1st thing about the breed or dogs in general is.
Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!

    Dogs are not people.

Why do the rescue obsessives have to turn every thread into one of their heavily biased sales patters? Many people aren't interested in getting a rescue dog - they just want a puppy. And there's nothing wrong with that.

What do you mean...they just want a puppy....there are far too many puppies in rescue too...not just older dogs.

At the very least you're expected to make sense. Otherwise you'll just be thought of as a crazy fundamentalist who places no importance on facts or logic.

The OP wants a puppy. From a particular bloodline.

Rescues are overwhelmingly full of undesirable dogs - which is one of the main reasons many people would rather get a puppy from a breeder.

Thanks for all the posts so far. Person_one is correct, I want a dog from puppy, I appreciate all the work people do with rescue dogs but for me that's not what I want right now.

Had springers in the family before and I work from home so can devote plenty of time to the pooch.

I walk with my girlfriend and her king charles spaniel and the dog is ready to go home way before I am so the exercise side of things won't be an issue.

I'm not going to rush into putting a deposit down on the first pup/litter I see, I'm going tomorrow to see what the litter is like in terms of health/appearance/condition and also to judge what kind of people the breeders are.

    P.s Caroline, I'm a guy ;)

Now that's just as misleading and ignorant as the post about 'judging' a dog by its parents.

The vast majority of dogs in rescue are there because flawed, lazy, ignorant humans got fed up of them and didn't feel the need to fulfil their responsibilities.

They can be more challenging than a pup, but a house trained socialised and calm older dog can also be a lot easier. All those 'undesirable' dogs were brand new puppies once.

Treevo, thanks for your input too. You're exactly right, I want a springer because I love the breed.

I agree that there are plenty of rescue dogs that need help but I'd appreciate it if people could keep the comments on that topic for a thread that asks for info or input into rescue dogs, don't try to persuade or guilt trip people into taking in a rescue :)

To be fair, a lot of people who want a puppy have no idea of how frequently puppies and pedigree dogs come into rescues and are happy to be informed. If you wanted to, you could probably even find a springer pup in rescue without having to wait too long.

If I were getting a puppy though, I'd want to be told I'd be going on a waiting list and I'd want to be getting the third degree from the breeder rather than feeling like they'd give the pups to anyone with the money.

And they will keep on dying as long as rescues have some tottaly unrealistic rules as to who can adopt a dog from a rescue, ignore people's enquiries, run a tick box exercise when nobody is "good enough" to adopt from them etc etc
