Is there such a thing as a "first time credit card"

My husband is 27 and never had any credit at all. I've been begging him for 6 of the 7 years we've been together to start building a credit history but he wouldn't because he "doesn't believe in it". However, despite savings and a decent income we got declined for a mortgage, partly due to him not having a credit history.

His credit rating is good, but there is nothing to show that he can make/does make regular payments.

Our bank (co-op, who I have my credit card with) has turned him down for a credit card because he has never had one before (this makes no sense to me) and capital one say the same.

I don't know where to turn to because the more he applies the worse his credit history will look when we are only trying to show he can afford, and does pay things. If that makes sense.

I am getting beyond frustrated with the whole situation. Please can anyone advise as to who will give him a first time credit card?

  • If he is on the electoral roll, has a bank account and a landline telephone/mobile,he must be able to get any one of the subprime cards available out there or a card from his own bank with a low credit limit.

Its best to check his credit file to make sure theres nothing odd on there before you apply.

Didn't capital one offer their secured credit card?
  • Capital One: With their application process it said don't apply if you've not had one before.

Inititally he wasn't on the electoral roll at this address as some documents were misfiled when we got married. I have rectified this, though it wasn't until we applied for the mortgage that we realised the mistake had been made.

He is on the electoral roll, has a bank account and mobile (now on contract though he has only had it 3 weeks, payg before that). We been living at this address over a year now and he was at his previous place for 16 years so I can't figure out where they are finding issues other than not having proof he can pay things in monthly installments as he has never had credit...
  • Regarding capital one,the 'don't apply if you have not had any credit before' point does not apply for the Secured Credit card.

You can either go for the secured credit card/any credit builder prepaid card or wait for the electoral roll info and the mobile contract to appear on his credit file and apply for capital one classic/aqua/barclaycard initial.
  • Thanks Victoria,

What does the "secured" in secure credit card mean? We have nothing to secure anything to, like our house, because we havent got the mortgage yet...
  • Ignore last post I've found an FAQ

Get him to try aqua or Vanquis. They're at the botom of the pile and should accept him, particularly if he has no adverse on his history.
  • @zx81 its best to wait for the electoral roll and mobile contract with 3/4 months payments to show up on the credit file than to risk ruining the credit history for the next year or so by making further applications!
  • I don't have that amount of time to wait.

We have to go for the mortgage no later than October so our credit reports need to be in order for then. I also have to have everything else in place for then including a better job (for me) with more hours and another 15% to put down as deposit (because the first 15% is just not enough).

I've already sorted my credit report which was so badly incorrect it was unreal and I've been applying for jobs since february 1st to little avail but luckily my current employer is willing to let me stay on at weekends so I can work both jobs. I've sorted the electoral roll out despite them getting my very english name incorrect 4 times and Ive had nothing but issues with the credit card fiasco that is borne of my husbands stubborn-ness.

Sorry about that, just feel sometime like I'm banging my head against a brick wall and I really am at breaking point.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but 6 months of positive repayment history for a sub prime credit card would not have that much impact as say, 24 or 26 months when applying or re-applying for a mortgage.

Lenders like to see long repayment history on accounts, it also depends on how long your husband has been with his current bank, and time at your current address.

Your income does not improve your credit file.
