Where did that free AMEX cashback card go?

I remember there was an AMEX cashback card that didn't have a monthly fee.

But I don't see it on MSE or on their website: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/credit-cards/cashback-credit-cards

Did anyone have it? Was it discontinued?

£25 a year detracts from any earnings.

Yes, it's gone for now. It may well come back as it has been withdrawn before and returned.

The version with the annual fee pays out a higher rate of cashback and is more profitable than the free card was if you spend more than about £7000 a year on it.

Lower spenders were better off with the Nectar AMEX but it looks like that is going to get worse too.
  • If you're a particularly low spender then it's probably better to go with Aqua or B/C anyway. However, the Amex will pay for itself after a single Foursquare promotion so the annual fee is a moot point. I have two Amex cards and I must have saved at least £300-400 on foursquare offers alone in the last 6 months.

    Interesting.

I'm not a big spender (flights I pay with via debit card, since otherwise there's an administration fee), maybe something like £2000-3000 a year.

But I like the idea of having an AMEX more than a crappy Aqua :D

Though Aqua will get me more cashback, no?

Foursquare offers are ending on 31st March 2013 :(
So not enough time to get one even :P

i have a nectar amex, didnt realise it was discontinued, maybe i'll keep it rather thn cancelling. you get 1 nectar point per pound so works out 0.5% cashback.

not the best, there are loads of better cards out there

After 3 months the ongoing cashback rate is 1.25%

So spend £2000 and your £25 fee is covered.

Also the Foursquare offers are good for cashback

I just got the Platinum cashback card. I'm a bit disappointed with only a 2.6k limit. I'm hoping they'll review and increase it in the future as I was hoping to buy a holiday on it. Probably because i had too many recent searches on my file as i opened a Santander 123 current account and CC two weeks before

I still have the fee free platinum cashback one though they have now added a 20 quid annual dormancy fee if you don't use it at least once in a 12 month period.

I only really keep it for the refund protection,

On a sidenote I got a capital one card, they had a great 5% cashback for the first 2000 or something. Something must've gone wrong with my cashback because I immediately spent £1200 for car insurance and went well over the £2k spend. I think I've spent close to £4k on the card. I did a balance transfer from it and missed a payment which I think wiped some of my cashback, in the end I only received £107 cashback a lot less than I anticipated.

maybe I was penalised for the balance transfer or missed payment, or perhaps the car insurance purchase of £1200 was capped at the first £200 or something.

with regards to the aqua card - it's designed for "building credit", you shouldn't be touching that card if you have good credit, you get a crap 32% interest and a really low limit.

I have one of these too - fantastic card - hasn't cost me a penny in the 2 years that I've had it but made around £200 free cash from petrol and supermarket shopping! :T But I don't think its available any more for new applicants. They did issue me with a new card recently so they are clearly keeping their exisiting customers and I haven't ever paid a fee.
