A lot of SENCOs are not teachers anyway. Ours isn't and she is beyond useless :(

We are lucky in that our current SENCO was a teacher. I have had many experiences of working as a teacher alongside ineffective, power crazy SENCOs and it is a frustrating and draining experience to say the least.

there should be a SEN manager at your LEA , i would be contacting them.

things are hard enough without having to fight every step of the way , we fought to get our dd statmented in 2010 now it looks like we will have to fight again to get funding for the SEN college thats perfect for her .

    good luck op.

Sadly, they are hopeless too. I complained on behalf of a family and the only thing the SEN did was to say she would talk to the school, not the child :mad:

A really effective school, where childrens' needs are met, goes to the effort to build very strong relationships with the parents. From the teachers, teaching assistants, SENCO up to the senior management team.

To do this you need to get to know the kids really well and build their trust in you. At my school the SENCO and senior management team are a visible presence to the children at break time and lunch time. They take the time to mingle with them, talk to them and listen when problems arrive. This way we know what we are talking about when a child has problems as we have seen them in a number of different circumstances and how they handle themselves. It gives a much fuller picture of the child if they need referrals and assistance from any outside agencies.

We are accessible to parents if they wish to come and talk to us about ther child. This encourages them to trust us and work with us. No parent wants to be left feeling as the OP does and no good school would want that either.

Sadly the OP hasn't experienced the warm fuzzy glow that your post would paint :(

I have a 17 year old son in Sixth Form. I've moved 130 miles to get him into a better senior school. They gave him more or less one on one TA support (even if they did withdraw the support in the last three months). He went from an expected 1 or 2 GCSE's to actually getting 7 with decent grades.

Now he's in another school. Very impressive at first, said all the right things. Til he started there. He's getting E's and U's and they won't support him. SENCO is unbelievably incompetent. I'm about to make a complaint to the Chairman of Governors but very very aware I'm out of time with my son's education. He's now completely demotivated and to be honest, I feel broken myself.., goodness knows how he feels.

I'm afraid I haven't met a good SENCO yet although I know they must exist.

I can sympathise with your anger re being accused of having Mauchausen's. I was accused of the same thing with my son's first senior school. Purely because I mentioned over and over again that he had Aspergers to the school because 1) they weren't aware of it somehow for two terms in spite of all my discussions with them, 2) they totally ignored his needs.

I know your probably tired but if you have a paper trail with real diagnosed conditions I would write a letter to her line manager along these lines:

    Dear x,
I am contacting you with regards to xxx, the social worker of my daughter who has been officially diagnosed with '........'. On Tuesday 19th March during a meeting 'social worker' informed me that she believes I have Munchausen's Syndrome after a discussion with my DD's SENCO from her school.

Despite my DD's profound and well documented conditions I have found the school aggressive in the way in which they have consistently sought to rubbish her needs and am taking them to task.

However I would suggest for 'social worker' to come to her conclusion after a single discussion with SENCO staff that she had not consulted with the medical professionals involved in DD's case.

I find her suggestion that I suffer from Munchausen's both unprofessional and completely unsubstantiated. As far as I am aware social workers are not medically qualified to be diagnosing people in this way.

Unfortunately I find this behaviour so completely unacceptable that I will be making a complaint with 'social workers' Governing Body. My complaint will cover the following:
    1. Her lack of balanced and informed consultation with professionals involved in my DD's care.
    2. Making medical diagnosis [plural?] that she is not qualified to make.
    3. Her belief there is nothing wrong with my DD despite extensive diagnosis made by healthcare professionals.

As a result I do not feel it appropriate for her to continue in her role and would request that a different social worker is assigned to help my DD meet her care needs.

As far as I am concerned there has been a complete breakdown in the relationship as a result of her behavior and given that she believes there is nothing wrong with my DD I am no longer in any way confident she can meet her role as a social worker to my DD.

    .................................

Something along those lines. Send to the line manager cc in the head of department and your local councillor [the one that deals with social services].

Report her to her Governing Body! Bear in mind there is no promise you will get a better social worker it is something of a lottery sadly.

I would attack the SENCO and the school same way. Record all meetings and calls or better yet follow up everything with an e-mail summing up the meeting so you have a paper trail of them confirming it.

I had to do this for my niece but our social worker was ok and school was a specialist one.

You need to ex-change the wording as the social worker actually laughed the suggestion off and spoke to the op. The suggestion was made by the senco

I am stunned, this is totally unacceptable and I'm so sorry that you have to fight for your daughter's needs. What a hideous time for you and all of your family. If I were you I'd be pulling my daughter out of the school and home schooling her asap she deserves so much better and to accuse of Munchausen syndrome, well my blood is boiling....! Good luck to you and don't let that woman get away with it!!!
