Believe me, I have no qualms about how someone chooses to spend their money, but it would be remiss of me not to post the best value option on a website dedicated to saving money.

The general advice on the board is to obtain a card such as the Halifax Clarity, Metro Bank's debit and/or credit card or an N&P Gold Light account.
I don't understand why people feel the need to buy US$ to go to Barbados.

Nobody's saying you NEED to buy US$. What everyone is saying is that it's a handy currency to carry.

That is just silly. BD$ is a HANDY currency to carry and far more convenient in Barbados than US$.
So I say get a decent card and withdraw your BD$ when you need them.

Your advice is very good and by following it the sensible holidaymaker will have less currency to carry around. You'll forgive the old fashioned amongst us though I'm sure if we still insist in getting a small amount of cash in a favoured currency before we travel?

As I wrote before, I don't have a problem. But it's not just about carrying less cash around, it's simply better value to not buy any at all. 'Favoured currency' is just nonsense. I'm sure that merchants here would prefer you to pay them in gold bullion if it were better for them. But the currency here is pounds and pence, just as the currency there is BD$ and cents. So use it.
People can decide from the options available, rather than to believe that US$ are the best option.
I never had a vendor refuse my payment in BD$. ;)

As I wrote before, I don't have a problem. But I had to continue to insist that there are better value options.
Then people can decide from the options available, rather than to believe that US$ were the best option.

I think you've done a good job of pointing that out. :)

What are you talking about - my comments were directed at Niftydigits not you. If you read more carefully you will see that your comments are same as mine - Tourist Currency is US$ in Barbados.

Give it a rest TB. The currency in Barbados is BD$.
Do you work for one of the big travel agencies? They are always encouraging people to buy currency uselessly.

Did you purchase your trip via a travel agent? Smells that way.

I would have thought the trip wasn't purchased via a travel agent as they would want to sell them Barbadian $s not US$ as they make more money on the local currencies.

I too would only use US$ if i had them lying about at home and they wanted using up.

Tourist currency is definately US $.
Barbados has its dark side, be sensible and don't tour alone, especially at night

Not my experience. We went out at night and had a fab time.

No different from going out in the UK - you just need to have your wits about you and don't take unnecessary risks
