i am sure I am not the only person who has purchased some haricot beans from approved foods.......a nice little bargain. Do any of you have some good recipes for meals that we may enjoy....if not looks like home made baked beans and bakepd taties for a while.
    Thank you in advance

I'm a vegetarian - so cant be sure on this as I wouldnt eat it personally...

But....isnt cassoulet a cheap recipe involving haricot beans????? Try googling for a recipe for it...

EDIT: Yep...its IS haricot beans. Saint Delia has a recipe online for poor persons cassoulet (long link - so google for "Delia Smith" + cassoulet).

you could use some in chilli instead of red kidney beans

    add them to HM soup

3 bean salad, add chick peas, cut green beans & oil & vinegar dressing

Italian or Mexican tuna & bean salad, some recipes HERE

    some recipes from St Delia

although I've never tried it myself, you can make dips with them, loads to choose from HERE

that's a big tin of beans* (if it's the one I'm thinking of) :D I'm sure you'll get lots of useful ideas soon :)

EDIT... *if you can't get through them fast enough, you could (drain?) & freeze in meal sized portions till you're ready to use them

I made a lovely dish with a lurking tin the other day. Chopped up a couple of onions, few cloves of garlic grated and some spicy sausages (merguez) cut into chunks. All into the pan together with a tiny bit of oil and all cooked down a bit. A good handful of chopped coriander, tin of tomatoes chopped up, salt and pepper, paprika and a bit of chilli.
Oh, think I fried some rubber mushrooms and chucked them in too. Just cooked it until it was nice and reduced down and served it with some HM wheaten bread. Delish!

  • How about sausage and bean casserole (onions, garlic, peppers, potatoes, other veg you fancy, tinned tomatoes, beans & sausage pieces).

    Bean burgers.

Bean pates and spreads for sandwiches and dips (e.g. bean and mushroom or white bean and walnut dip)

    Chillis

    Add some to soups

Bean and sweet potato stew (ginger, garlic, sweet potatoes, carrots, beans, tin of tomatoes, seasoning).

Refried beans to go with chilli or to use in wraps.

    HTH.

I got the Approved Food beans too, they are dried though and I haven`t used these before, can anyone please tell me if you need to treat them in some special way first (such as overnight soaking)? Or do you have to boil them first?

Refried beans to go with your spuds? Fry onions and garlic in lard(or a little oil to be healthy, doesn't make a huge difference to the taste) and roughly mash in the beans, you can add tin toms/passatta and strips of bell pepper for added veg. Delicious, trust me!

Haricot beans are good in bean/minestrone soup, they just have a nice buttery texture that works well imo.

If you want something really off the wall, remember that in the last war when marzipan was unobtainable, mashed haricot beans mixed with a drop of two of almond essence was used as a substitute, as it apparently has a very similar taste & testure. Not suggesting you use it to cover cakes, but you could try making up a small quantitiy, rolling it into marble size balls and eating them as sweets. (There was a demonstration of this on one of the TV programmes recently - Yesterday channel ?? when a chef tried reproducing a Christmas dinner using only wartime ingredients that were available).

Yes, you definitely have to soak them overnight or for about 8 hours and then boil them until soft. If you ever get dried red kidney beans remember that this variety contain certain toxins which have to be got rid of by boiling fast for about 10 minutes before they are put onto a simmer, so this variety of beans can't be cooked from scratch in a slow cooker.
