Generally leave at the right time but if something is urgent or really needed for first thing then I would stay on and do it but usually get the time back.

It's not only about leaving on the dot, not being a charity or expecting overtime pay for every extra minute you do.
Sometimes that 'overtime' is kind of inbuilt in your package.
If you are a manager and get manager's pay, it goes with responsibility and expectation to perform tasks given, whether they are finished at 5 or not.
If you are regularly there till midnight, either you get paid a hell of a lot, or it's a job for 2 people obviously..
I work to deadlines.. those days if something goes wrong I have to stay late to make the deadline, but times before are fairly easy going and I will leave on time.
Unfortunately I cannot spread the work better as with some jobs you just have to first get info to work with and they just don't happen till certain time.
  • to leave on time is an aspiration atm

Usually its only about 20 mins but I've had to do a fair bit recently and although its 'voluntary' it has given me leverage to discuss a long overdue pay rise.

Usually start around 10 mins before my start time, and it's usually around 5 minutes after end time, if it's a close and we can't get customers out, or the alarm won't set then it could be any time after end of shift.

I arrive 30 mins before shift due to gym, there is no pressure for me to start early or forego lunch. I have been ordered by my manager to take lunch as I was completely engrossed. Get paid overtime and no pressure to do it or do unpaid work. Even so, there is one person who has been noticed clock watching and speeding out the door. Its unclassy to me, much better impression if you take your time leaving.

I am contracted to 42.5 hours per week (plus an extra half day every two weeks) but usually nearer 45 at the moment. Unpaid (I'm salaried, hourly workers get their standard rate), no time in lieu, no flexibility and if you're off sick then you don't get paid.

At one point I would be in 8-6.30 every day, sometimes we'd stay even later but now I try to start 30mins early and finish on time so that I can feel happier about my work:life ratio and get things done in an evening.

last job I'd get there anything between an hour and 15 mins early, usually. Lunch consisted of me walking to the local shop and grabbing a sandwich to eat at my desk. Was meant to finish workk at 5:30pm, regularly stayed until 6 to ensure everything got done. Was made redundant last month as I "wasn't pulling my weight". That was the official excuse. God knows what the *actual* reason was, as I was the one who designed, from scratch, pretty much all their admin systems and modified the p*ss poor ones that were in place - as a result the admin was running much more smoothly, but in order to get it all done I was working evenings at home as well until all the systems were up and running. I solved problems deemed "impossible" by the company MD, covered a work colleagues backside when he repeatedly screwed up to minimise the fall-out, increased customer engagement and saved the company a great deal of money by negotiating costs with suppliers...all this and I "wasn't pulling my weight". *sighs*.

I used to happily go in a bit early or leave a bit late to help out. I would take on extra and enjoy the challenge.

However after being made redundant 4 times and just not getting back anything for my loyalty and the extra mile except the same as the person who did the bare minimum i realised i was being stupid.

I am still happy to go in early and stay late - but I will now only do it rarely and on my terms.
Please note I have a cognitive disability - as such my wording can be a bit off, muddled, misspelt or in some cases i can miss out some words totally...

I start when I start and I finish when I finish.
The only time I leave at a set time is when I have to pick up the kids from school.
