I leave as soon as my shift finishes, the way I see it is that if they want me for longer they can pay me for it. That said, I structure my work so I don't end up with anything big to do at the end of the day, and certainly nothing that can't be done the next day.

I think exactly the same. You go to work to get paid, if you are not paid why should you work. Although still doesnt stop me feeling bad when I leave.

Hi, for over 20 years I worked as a Chef, so there was never once that I left on the dot!! I can remember my ex asking why I was late home, when I was meant to have finished at 9pm, my answer was.. well we advertise that we serve meals until 9pm - so if people arrive for a meal at 8.55 I serve them. Is part of catering life.

I know work in NHS, I am always a few mins early, gives me time to say hello to others, get computer on the go and get a drink.

I have to say that apart from a couple of times that have had to dash for doctor appointments, I never leave on the dot, you cant just go in the middle of a phonecall or printing stuff etc..

I get paid for 20 Hours a week but probably work 22.5 hours a week on average.

My DH has been seriously ill for the last 2 years with no sign of an improvement any time soon. My boss has been incredibly understanding when I've needed time off for hospital appointments or visiting DH in hospital so I don't mind giving a little back.

I get to work about 45 mins before I start to get my studying out of the way, then leave on the dot. I can count the number of times I've had to work late on one hand. I'm the only person on my team doing my job but generally, I work about a month ahead of everyone else laying the groundwork for projects. So rarely any last minute work needed.

I work in banking and contracted for 9-6 but if you came and left on the dot it would not look right. Occasional days its fine to leave on time and Fridays we finish at 5pm, but usually im there till 6.30pm as there is always things to do. And we dont get paid overtime or bonus as i am temping. I dont mind though as its a nice atmosphere and relaxed during the day, and have friends internally who do 8-8 as a standard!!

No chance - technically I work 37.5 hours per week but I tend to arrive by 8.00ish and I'm often there till mid-evening because a deal has come in late in the day. I don't get paid overtime or TOIL. 2011 was a particular bad year - we were there till 10pm most nights (let's hear it for the take-away delivery people) and came in every weekend because there was a massive project on. None of us really minds and there are no clockwatchers - it's fascinating work and it's expected in the industry.

    This ^^

Quite frequently arrive early and stay a few hours beyond 5pm, most days eat lunch at desk.

Have done the above of mad hours, last year had a month or two of 90+ hours of overtime/month unpaid/nonTOIL.

As a ,then, programmer, 1999 was the worst, Nov/Dec we would be at work 7am, have a 1 hour lunch, work to 7pm, 1 hr dinner, then work to 3-4am, back home or sleep at work for 3 hours then awake and back at work 7am.

I think I lasted about 2 weeks before I could only single task and at the end of 8 weeks I couldn't care less if the world ended due to Y2K.

But then its back to what people are saying, do you love your job?

Nope, very rarely do I leave on time. I always start bang on my start time but rarely, if ever, do I leave on time. It wouldn't really be the done thing to hang up on a client saying "Sorry, my shift is over, can't help you now".

Sounds like you have a good job, a good boss and you are a good employee. So it's win/win for all.

Hope things work out for you and your OH, you deserve it.
