what are NP's favorite things to do in paris? going on tuesday and haven't got time to look things up. :)

It can be horribly hot and humid in Paris at this time of year, so don't plan too much.

    My favourite out-of-the-way places:

Musee des Arts et Metiers - Think Science Museum, Kensington, with items such as the plane Bleriot crossed the channel in. Also, deliciously cool on a hot day!

La Saint-Chapelle - Extraordinarily beautiful (if you like blue!). Give Notre Dame a miss and go here instead. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sainte-Chapelle

No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

BTW, I would give the Eiffel Tower a miss, partly because it's rather out of the way, but mainly because of the queues. If you want to spend loads, the Restaurant Jules Verne there has its own lift, but as Gen says it's VERY expensive.

On the opposite side of the river is the Palais de Chaillot with some terrific fountains (but only switched on from time to time, so you need to check the timetable) - this has a great view of the Eiffel Tower, btw and it's very MSE.

    Well done, but:

£8 for a jar of marmalade? <-- STUPIDITY ALERT!

Ultimately at those sorts of events, its fundraising. People aren't just paying £8 for marmalade, they are donating £8 for the school/village fete or whatever and getting a nice jar or marmalade on the process.

That's how many look at it.

I looked up the definition of "very expensive" and found reviews containing these snippets:
    "Langoustine appetizer.... 88€"
Now, I don't know what a langoustine is, but I do know the word appetiser means "spoonful"..... so 88 Euros is VERY expensive. For that much I'd want a full dinner, bed, breakfast, a packed lunch for the next day, a great view, free wifi and a big telly in my room. :) ... and I'd still think twice about the price.

Somebody else said "la carte was €64 with 3-courses" - so, no idea what la carte means, but "€64 with 3-courses" seems like that person was a better buyer of food than the first loon.

I don't think I have ever been up the Eiffel Tower, but I like going past it.

We usually eat one meal at a particular restaurant in montparnasse, and so get opportunity to stroll back by the tower.

Last time, a few years ago, was with DH and a work trip and my feet were killing me then too. :(. I remember my tights were badly laddered as well.

It would be nice to pull off 'chic' one day :)

It's one of those special occasion places I think Pastures. My BiL proposed to my SiL there. They speak very fondly of it. Still haven't got married though!

I have bought white 'tote' bags for the party bags with the plan being to iron on a printed image and then the girls decorate them. However I was looking at some cotton ones and then saw I could choose 'recycled' ones instead from the same supplier which I thought would be greener...but it turns out the recycled ones are plastic not cotton which I discovered when I applied the hot iron...

Not sure what the way forward is now with the party 13 hours away (Where is that shrug shoulders icon when you need it?)

You over complicated things to start with. Add up the cost of the bags, the cost of the printer inks, your time spent faffing around....I would have thought better of you.

There are two requirements for going home presents:
    1. the kids have something to hold as they leave the party,
    2. the something is not going to melt all over car seats/ clothes.

Even party bags means you have wasted money on the bags to start with - they are only going in the bin.

Go to the supermarket/ pound shop and buy some cheap colouring books. For the time that the kids were going to spend decorating bags, let them loose in the garden. If you want to add to the entertainment value, put a circular sprinkler in the middle of the lawn and challenge them to run from one side of the garden to the other without getting wet.

Dress it up to your kids, that the bags were only in reserve in case the weather was bad. Who wants to keep the kids indoors in weather like this?

If you really want to personalise the going home presents, stick labels on each book "Thank you for coming to ____'s party. Hope you had fun."
