It's so much cooler today. I had to change out of a dress into trousers and a long sleeve t.

    My feet are still cold.

My taps arrived form china and they are FAB. We were really worried as they were late and fed ex were saying they had not collected them and they were not in the system etc, but they arrived this morning. They seem really good, heavy, and expensive feeling. :). Bargain.

    Still haven't got valves.

Busy, sweaty day - went to court this morning, done and dusted and back home now (and changed, fast, into summer clothes!).

I put my fruit and orange zest to soak in black tea yesterday, and I've just made my first two loaves of Bara Brith and put them in the oven.

Edited to add - LIR, my Mama said the same about the weather in Kent just now on the phone. It's boiling here, though.

Doozer cuz says he is tempted to stay here but I think doozer girl would kill me if I kept her little cousin. (He's not little). Saves going through social services if you adopt an adult though.

He's adopted all the chickens and told me off for not checking their water quickly enough this afternoon :).

Mention to the Doozer's that I have a nice little project in Herts they would be welcome to quote on.

First 2 x 2lb Bara Briths cooling, next batch (2 x 2lb, 1 x 1lb) cooking. They do smell OK, here's hoping they taste adequate.

Ever been to the Museum of Welsh Life? They sell them there, not that the environment's a great place to buy/eat them to be honest.... but that's the first place I saw them. Didn't buy any as the shop looked a bit pokey/inadequate (e.g. wasps about).

This was the uninspiring bakery, http://www.flickr.com/photos/24755795@N08/2761750451/ - the door, when open, has those plastic 1960s plastic strips.... but still the wasps are inside.

I've a Bara Brith recipe.... never made it as it'd make too much.

    No, never.

My Nanna used to make Bara Brith all the time - my Granny made "Bunloaf", as in the Swallows and Amazons type thing. Neither grandmother wanted to hear that the Bara Brith and Bunloaf were very similar to each other (-:
    Expecting a coach party?

I'd not cook a 1lb thing as that's about 10 portions of something.... and you're Cooking for England.

I was looking at a Tea Loaf recipe the other day, but it needed tea bags to be steeped in water overnight..... and I'd not want to buy a whole box of tea bags just to make a cake that was larger than I needed, that I didn't even know if I'd like the taste of.

Bara Brith is a type of tea loaf - you make strong black tea, and soak the raisins / currents / orange zest / sultanas / candied peel for at least 12 hours in it. But I don't buy tea bags, I just use some from the cupboard.

They are for Isaac's school fete on Saturday. I've made sponge cakes before, but I'd fed up of doing them, so I'm making Bara Brith instead.

Well, they are supposed to be for the fete, but the gannets are circling. I don't know if they'll all make it. Sam was muttering about quality control earlier, when she and Isaac got back from school.

One good thing about tea breads is that they not only keep in an air-tight box really well, they improve a bit with age - best to keep them at least 3-4 days before eating, apparently.

Do you never just stick the kettle on for a quick cuppa?!

    Deprivation on an awesome scale.

Having tea bags in the kitchen really isn't a posh alert - I reckon almost every kitchen in the country does. We have builder's tea, lady grey, rude-boy (can't remember the real name, that South African one), camomile, peppermint, apple and cinnamon, camomile and spicey apple - I think that's it.

I never drink coffee, I'm a tea girl.

We were asking her to repeat stuff as she had a strong scottish accent, she asked DS to repeat because we were on speaker phone. A bit of a shambolic conversation.

It must be confusing to talk to someone with a different accent. Still it's well worth a try, there's lots of nice accents.
