It would take a lot for me to consider an internship ..... travel alone costs a lot. With nobody paying anything except me, it'd be hard to make sense of doing it "in the hope of....." Rent/bills don't pay themselves and being at an internship takes you out of the instant market of finding something "real" to start immediately.0

We have a series of 6 week internships coming up. All, without exception, have gone to the offspring off clients.
On the plus side, they're so rich that it won't matter whether or not they get paid. On the other hand they're the last bunch of people that need a leg-up in life. Still it's a cheap way to retain clients which is the reason we, and a lot of the rest of the industry, do that.0 -
I may be wrong, but I thought that then they were holiday placements for students. There certainly wasn't the expectation that you would need to do an internship to get the job, that there appears to be now.l
It definitely wouldn't have np been a holiday placement for my sibling.0 -

Of course we actually did appropriate work, learning on the job, but also distracting the paid employees who graciously invested their time and effort teaching us what to do and how not to make fools of ourselves. I imagine we cost the company involved a fair bit in lost time, money and efficiency.
That is perhaps different from how some people will portray internships, ie, that they are effectively being used as free labour and not learning anything relevant, but that wasn't my experience at all and I certainly don't think it's the experience of the majority even today.
I graduated at a time when jobs were hard to find. I fired off 160+ applications and got 5 interviews (not all for real jobs).
Volunteered to work in a local hospital lab unpaid just for (i) updating skills (ii) updated reference (iii) show I'm not an idler.
A real job came up there after about a few months and I got it. Employers treated gap years very suspiciously at the time. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -

The payment for summer vacation schemes to US law students always astounds me, Lucky, lucky things I think.0 -

Gap yahs are a relatively recent invention. They certainly never happened back in my day.
I sometimes wonder how people can afford a year abroad 'volunteering' but then think of a stint as an intern in the UK as unpaid labour. Must be the sunshine factor0 -
Are you checking for diabetes? This is me all over when my levels are high...I can sleep for England fuelled by carbs.
I am aware that my diet really affects sleeping patterns. Certain foods (usually sugary ones) can keep me awake for hours. & I don't have a good sleep pattern anyway!:oIt's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

The "if all else fails, read the instructions" is something my mother reckons men always think.
In fairness/the interests of balance, the instructions is always the first thing I grab & read, before even taking stuff out of packaging! It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
The zealot in me peeked last night and I could definitely see another couple of tomatoes popping through!
Cucumbers are also popping through which is great. Next weekend will see the 3rd batch of lettuce planted, plus possibly the first round of re-potting! Think I'll have some carrots to thin out etc. It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
Yesterday went wandering up Clent Hills. Because it was so clear, the views were superb!
Running into a few problems with regards to holidays. Having to do some re-thinking...It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0
