The police should record all the details in case they end up catching the fraudster, so that they will have lots of crimes to charge him with.
I suspect that there are so many scams these days, and the police have limited resources, so may not investigate each incident. The criminal will be using a fake (or stolen) name and bank account
The police put their effort into publicising all the different scams in order to try to stop people falling for them ie crime prevention.
Never buy anything popular (ie mass appeal) on Gumtree as the risk of fraud is high. Even if you meet the seller to handover the cash, the criminals may just rob you. People have been beaten up as well.0 -
I have got his correct details full name, bank account and all the evidence of the crime..
No, you have got the name that he told you and a bank account that was either set up using fake details or possibly belongs to a unwitting accomplice.
Unfortunately, the police do not have the resources to spend time and money on investigating what they know will likely be a dead end. So they spend the resources they do have on trying to educate people about the risks of buying from strangers.0 -
everything is possible, I'll better try and forget about it. the police will catch him one day.
I really appreciate ur help guys
Thank you very much for your advice0 -
you are absolutely right I have learnt the lesson.. I am just surprised what is the role of the police here.. isn't to protect people from such scammers.. I have got his correct details full name, bank account and all the evidence of the crime..
It's highly unlikely you have much that can be used as evidence. It's very difficult to use texts in court and even more difficult to use phone calls, mobile numbers are untraceable, any name and address is very likely fake. Scammers set up fake bank accounts and Paypal accounts anyway.
Sorry but you basically gifted the money into their bank account, there is no chargeback unless you used a credit card or Paypal. Police and insurance are not there to protect you from being careless or failing to use common sense, you are expected to protect yourself just as you protect your home by hiding valuables and locking the front door, or protect your purse by keeping your handbag with you at all time, zipped. Gumtree is well known to be more scammers than genuine, you have massively more protection on eBay.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0
